Dear Governor Crist, Members of the RPOF State Executive Committee and Fellow Republicans,

This month marks the conclusion of my third year as Chairman of the Republican Party of Florida, and less than one year since my re-election in January 2009, with over 77 percent of the vote. Since becoming Chairman, I have been honored to work with you to make our Party stronger, and I sincerely appreciate the tremendous effort you have put forth in serving the Republican Party of Florida.

During my Chairmanship, I have worked tirelessly to develop new and innovative fundraising programs, enhanced grassroots resources, increased minority voter outreach and worked to enhance the Republican Party of Florida’s status as an influential partner in state and national politics, this while sacrificing time with my family, including four young children. I made this sacrifice in my personal life because I believe in our Party, and in the principles we as Republicans hold dear.

As Chairman, I came from outside of the RPOF structure, but worked hard to hit the ground running by putting into practice some of the principles that I found successful in the private sector. We worked to make the organization more professional by putting into place a set of standards, which hold every staff member and all organizations chartered through the RPOF accountable for conduct, productivity and results.

During my Chairmanship, the RPOF worked to build a diverse party that includes Republicans from across the state without consideration of ethnic or cultural barriers. We took steps to restructure the Party and built a vast organization based on county leadership and a strong base of grassroots volunteers, and provided local leadership with needed resources. Understanding the long-time voter registration deficit facing Florida Republicans, during my Chairmanship the RPOF allocated an unprecedented number of resources and staff to voter registration and worked with county leadership to explore new avenues to successfully change the tide in voter registration. This effort included developing a comprehensive program aimed at encouraging young Floridians, African Americans and Hispanics to consider joining the Republican Party. The results have caused a growing number of young people to join our party.

Early in my Chairmanship, I advocated for a January Presidential Preference Primary election, which brought the Republican Presidential candidates to Florida for three nationally-televised, primetime debates, hosted by RPOF, and successfully lobbied for the seating of Florida’s full delegation at the Republican National Convention. We worked with Republican clubs and organizations across Florida to get out the vote in 2008, and as a result, not a single Republican member of the Florida House or Senate was defeated and Republicans maintained a majority in Florida’s Congressional Delegation. For this fact, I will always be proud of our efforts.

After the 2008 Election, I was privileged to be one of the first leaders to endorse our new Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele. I had the honor of serving as a member of the Steele Transition Team, along with recently being elected to serve as Chairman of the RNC Rules Committee, all in order to ensure Florida Republicans maintain a prominent role in the Republican National Committee.

However, despite the great progress our Party has seen over the last three years, a small but vocal group within our Party has made it a point to destroy this progress and negatively impact our opportunity for victory in 2010. There has been, as you may be aware, an effort by this group to seek my removal for reasons that hold no justification. The facts and accuracy relating to this issue have become lost and irrelevant to these disruptive efforts and despite my own efforts, in addition to the efforts of others, to correct the record with the facts and truthfulness, these divisive individuals and their efforts continue without any concern for our Party’s future.

While I am honored by your unwavering support and the support of Republican members of the Florida Legislature, many members of the State Executive Committee, and many RPOF donors, I have determined that this internal discord has many origins and political agendas, but the one common result is a detrimental effect on the Republican Party. Since 2007, I have made a point to put the best interest of the Party before my own, even when criticisms were misdirected and invalid, and I will do so again now. While some are more interested in tearing and shredding the fabric of the Republican Party to pieces, I will not be a participant in this destructive behavior. Therefore, I am putting the future of our Party first and shall step down as Chairman of the Republican Party of Florida effective February, 20, 2010.

Serving as Chairman of the Republican Party of Florida has been the privilege of a lifetime. My wife Lisa and I have had the opportunity to develop many long-lasting friendships. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Lisa and my family for their love and unwavering support, during my Chairmanship.

I would also like to thank the talented and dedicated RPOF staff for their hard work, dedication and loyalty to our Party.

As I prepare to leave this post with Republicans maintaining a United State Senate seat, the Governor’s Mansion, three of four Cabinet posts, and strong majorities in the Florida House, Senate and Congressional Delegation, I look forward to continuing to work to elect Republicans to office, and now call upon all Republicans throughout Florida to put our differences aside, end our Party’s internal conflict and disagreements, and focus on electing Republicans in 2010.

RPOF to Report Over $4.5 Million in Fourth Quarter Contributions

Governor Crist Signs Bill Expanding Passenger Rail, Creating Jobs

TALLAHASSEE – Governor Charlie Crist today signed House Bill 1B, historic legislation passed during the recent special session. The bill establishes a comprehensive framework for Florida’s current and future passenger rail system, which today includes SunRail, Tri-Rail and plans for high speed rail. The Governor congratulated Senate President Jeff Atwater and House Speaker Larry Cretul, along with the entire Florida Legislature, for recognizing the importance of the jobs and economic development that will result from passenger rail throughout the Sunshine State.

“Future generations of Floridians will look on this day as a bold step toward modernizing how residents and visitors will travel in our state,” Governor Crist said. “Individuals and businesses from North Florida to South Florida will benefit from the economic and job opportunities that will arise along each of the rail corridors. Together, we move the Sunshine State into a new era of collaboration and innovation.”

Governor Crist signed the bill in Tallahassee alongside Mark Wilson, president and CEO of the Florida Chamber of Commerce, and Agency for Workforce Innovation Director Cynthia R. Lorenzo. Also joining Governor Crist for the bill signing ceremony were Bobby Jernigan, executive director of the Florida Commission for the Transportation Disadvantaged, and Sally Benjamin of the Florida Council of the Blind.

Later today, Governor Crist will highlight the job-creation and economic-development opportunities of the legislation during visits to Tampa, Orlando and Fort Lauderdale, three communities that will directly benefit from the passenger rail projects. The Governor will congratulate Senator Mike Fasano, Representative Kevin Ambler, former Senator Daniel Webster and Senator Jeremy Ring for their work to enhance passenger rail transportation in the Sunshine State. Lt. Governor Jeff Kottkamp will attend the bill signing ceremonies in Tampa and Orlando.

"As elected leaders we have a responsibility to create an environment in which Florida's families, communities, and businesses can be successful," said Florida Senate President Jeff Atwater. "Today, Florida is embracing the opportunity to lead the nation in developing a comprehensive transportation system, thereby ensuring our competitive edge in the 21st Century global economy. A comprehensive transportation system, creating opportunities and avenues to connect employers and employees, is integral to building a stronger future for Florida."

The primary components of House Bill 1B include the following:

• SunRail – The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is working with the federal government and Central Florida officials to develop and operate SunRail, a commuter rail transit project that will run along a 61-mile stretch of existing rail freight tracks in Orange, Seminole, Volusia and Osceola counties. The legislation authorizes FDOT to complete the purchase of the Central Florida Rail Corridor once the Federal Transit Administration has established a full-funding grant agreement.

• Tri-Rail – The legislation also provides additional funding for Tri-Rail, which currently operates 50 trains daily from Palm Beach County to Miami-Dade County. The operator of the passenger line, South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (SFRTA), announced in April 2009 that it was in danger of significant service reductions without additional resources.

• Florida Statewide Rail Commission and Florida Rail Enterprise – The legislation creates the Florida Statewide Rail Commission to advise the FDOT and the Legislature on the development and operation of Florida’s passenger rail systems. In addition, it creates the Florida Rail Enterprise within FDOT to oversee all state-owned passenger rail systems. The legislation addresses liability risks associated with state-owned passenger rail corridors and requires FDOT to work with communities affected by increased freight rail traffic resulting from routing modifications.

“I appreciate the hard work, discipline, and focus demonstrated by the House and Senate, and the Governor’s Office, in approving this important bill,” said House Speaker Larry Cretul. “We have opened the door to a new and improved transportation future in Florida, one in which citizens and visitors will find travel easier and more efficient, and we did so with no new taxes. It’s a win/win for all parties.”

Governor Crist praised legislators for solidifying Florida’s commitment to expanding passenger rail service throughout the state and laying the groundwork for the Tampa-Orlando-Miami High Speed Rail Program. Florida has applied to receive $2.6 billion in federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 funds for the Tampa-Orlando segment. Once the high speed rail segment is developed, the Tampa Bay Area Regional Transportation Authority plans to develop commuter rail connections throughout the Tampa Bay region.

Last week, Governor Crist wrote to Secretary Ray LaHood of the United States Department of Transportation, asking him to approve Florida’s application to develop high speed rail. Governor Crist reminded Secretary LaHood that approval of Florida’s application in 2009 will ensure initiation of the Tampa-Orlando segment in 2010.

Governor Crist Celebrates New Mike Fasano Regional Hurricane Shelter

HUDSON – Governor Charlie Crist today participated in the ribbon-cutting ceremony to commemorate the opening of the new Mike Fasano Regional Hurricane Shelter. The Governor joined Senator Mike Fasano, Representatives Will Weatherford and John Legg, Pasco County commissioners, and state and local emergency management officials for the ceremony.

“This new shelter facility will greatly enhance the capabilities of the county during disasters and other times of need, as well as continue to foster a culture of preparedness which is so important here in Florida,” said Governor Crist. “It is fitting that this regional shelter is named after Senator Mike Fasano, a great Floridian who exemplifies public service and has an unwavering commitment to the people of Florida.”

"I am both thrilled and honored to be a part of this state of the art facility. It gives me great peace of mind to know that in case of a hurricane, the residents of West Pasco will have a world class shelter to keep them safe throughout the storm," said Senator Mike Fasano.

The new 37,263 square foot facility is designed and constructed to meet the new International Code Council storm shelter standards. It can withstand hurricane wind gusts up to 190 miles per hour and has the capacity to house an estimated 1,000 persons for a minimum of 72 hours of self-sustained continuous operation. Additionally, this facility is scheduled to house a county health department clinic and a premier health clinic, a county effort to increase access to health care.

David Halstead, interim deputy director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management, added, “This shelter and clinic is a testament to the coordinated efforts of state, local and federal entities to ensure that residents are served and protected during a disaster.”

The project was made possible by a $6.3 million grant provided by the State of Florida. In addition, $979,722 in Federal Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) funds were used to complete the facility for a total state-federal investment of $7,368,451. The Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) is a federally-funded program, administered by the State of Florida to help prevent future losses of life and property damage due to disasters. HMGP projects strengthen public facilities and equipment, schools, roadways, public utility systems, water control facilities and recreational areas in communities throughout Florida.

The Governor emphasized the importance of disaster preparedness year round. State emergency managers advise that the current El Niño pattern may trigger severe weather in Florida this winter and upcoming spring. The Governor noted that deadly tornado outbreaks struck during the overnight and early morning hours during El Niño events in 1982-83, 1997-98, and 2006-07. He recalled the tornadoes that struck Lake County in 2007 and killed 21 people, making it the deadliest tornado outbreak in the United States that year and the second deadliest in Florida’s history.

Republicans Pick Up Mayoral Seat In Lakeland

U.S. Rep. Suzanne Kosmas, D-New Smyrna Beach, is taking more hits from the left over her vote against the Democratic health care plan that barely passed the House this month – without her support – and the fallout continued over the weekend from her previously staunch labor supporters.

Volusia/Flagler Central Labor Council President Stacy Stepanovich sent a letter to Kosmas this weekend letting her know that Central Florida labor groups will halt all contributions to her campaign until further notice, due to the Kosmas 'no' vote.

While the labor groups' early 2010 endorsement still holds, the Central Florida, Space Coast and Volusia/Flagler AFL-CIO's all voted unanimously Thursday night to suspend check-writing, flier walks, and any other efforts for the Kosmas campaign, according to this letter to Kosmas.

The Republican Party of Florida today announced that Washington Times reporter and blogger Amanda Carpenter will moderate the “Young Voters: New Voice of the GOP” panel discussion at the RPOF’s Drive the Discussion Exchange ’09 youth event on August 22, at the Gaylord Palms Resort in Orlando, FL.

Amanda Carpenter is a reporter and blogger for the Washington Times. She was formerly a national political reporter for Townhall.com, the leading online publication for news, opinion, and talk. Prior to her stint at Townhall, she was a reporter for Human Events. Carpenter has made numerous media appearances that include segments on the Fox News, CNN, CNBC, MSNBC, and other outlets. Thank you for that warm welcome. I would like to thank the NAACP board of directors and Chairman Julian Bond for having me here to speak with you today. Also, President Jealous, Vice Chairman Roslyn M. Brock, and Assistant Treasurer Jesse Turner. Jr.

President Jealous and Vice Chairman Brock, I thank you for your willingness to seek out advocates in all circles. We are all interested in the educational, economic, political and social wealth of our community. I thank the board for their passion and dedication to serving the disadvantaged among us, for breaking down barriers and standing as leaders.

As a proud member of the Prince George's county chapter of the NAACP, I am honored to be here to celebrate 100 years.

The NAACP was born to fight for freedom, liberty, opportunity and fairness. Its founders were a group of brave visionaries from varying backgrounds, including black and white Republican men and women. Perhaps the most prominent African-American Republican of the group was James Weldon Johnson, the co-author of “Lift Ev’ry Voice And Sing.” Such a proud institution with an incredibly rich legacy.

I am proud to be here as the first African-American chairman of the Republican National Committee and on behalf of the RNC I bring you the warmest of greetings and congratulations!

I’ve been looking forward to this day for some time. It is for me, a particular honor to bring greetings in this 100th year. I spent some time looking at previous remarks by Republicans before this body and I was struck by the litany of phrases that republicans often cut and paste into a speech to this organization. “Party of Lincoln” four or five times ... Reminders that Teddy Roosevelt was a Republican, and he invited Booker T. Washington to the White House … and the civil rights act was passed by a Republican congress over democrat filibusters … oh, and one of my favorites, Bull Connor was a democrat.

I decided instead, that today I would depart from “the complete Republican’s guide to speaking to African-Americans.”

Let me begin with something I read the other day – a look at the statistical averages of black babies versus whites:“The black baby born in America today, regardless of the section of the nation in which he is born, has about one-half as much chance of completing high school as a white baby born in the same place on the same day . . . One-third as much chance of completing college, one-third as much chance of becoming a professional man . . . Twice as much chance of becoming unemployed, a life expectancy which is 7 years shorter, and the prospect of earning only half as much.”

That is not a pretty picture. But here’s the really heart wrenching point: those words were spoken by President John F. Kennedy in 1963.

Nearly all of what we think of as “the civil rights era” has taken place since JFK gave that speech. And in that time, a lot of progress has been made in both the political and the cultural arenas. Many of you in this room have been the authors of that progress and many others of you have witnessed it.

Indeed, not far from the steps on which I was inaugurated the first African-American Lt. Governor of Maryland in 2002, Kunta Kinte was sold into slavery over 150 years ago. Moreover, not far from the very steps on which Barack Obama was inaugurated the nation’s first African-American president, black men and women could not drink from the same water fountain as whites.

But our standing on those steps was not just a testament to progress, but also a challenge to the idea that we have completed the journey.

As far as we’ve come since 1963, the amount of progress that has been made, while impressive, leaves us empty in the face of incarceration rates, unemployment rates, drop-out rates, aids infection rates, and the general rate of poverty for African-Americans.

For 46 years of these 100 years, we have carried a lot of water for others. And yet, the long odds faced by our children have changed very little. So it is time we start to carry that water for ourselves; or we will continue to fail our community, our children, and our ability to build legacy.

At the dawning of this century, most of the problems facing black America are rooted in diminished access to quality education and fewer and fewer opportunities to either work a job or own a business. On these points, a one-party agenda often fails to get the job done.

My friends, educational and economic upward mobility are the root source of empowerment, ownership and opportunity. You undermine those and you guarantee preservation of the status quo. But you and I know our legacy has never been about status quo — remember Attucks, Tubman, Douglass, Booker t., Dubois, Malcolm, Parks, King and so many others including those who founded this venerable organization.
We are the post-civil rights generation of African-Americans and for us the battle for civil rights in the latter half of the twentieth century has become a struggle for economic and educational opportunity at the dawning of this century.

Thurgood Marshall once said, “None of us has gotten where we are solely by pulling ourselves up from our bootstraps. We got here because somebody bent down and helped us.”

My purpose for coming here today, is simply to tell you face to face, that you are not alone in that struggle. The Republican Party, which has shared an inextricable link to the African-American community, has a way forward.

The Republican Party is prepared to bend down every day to help; but, we will do so with a different perspective—a 21st century perspective that pursues policies and advances principles that turns the hope of economic liberty and empowerment into action. True freedom is ill-served by diminishing educational choices, choking off entrepreneurial spirit, and empowering government more than the people.

As Chairman of the Republican National Committee, I recognize the efforts it took to get a seat at the lunch counter, but I also know what it will take for this and future generations to own the diner. So, I have come here today not only to bring greetings, but also to renew our relationship with the NAACP and the African-American community.

And I do this with a sense of purpose and not cliché because the GOP and NAACP have very often missed real opportunities to communicate and engage each other. Indeed, for the GOP and the NAACP “outreach” should mean more than a speech here and a pat on the back there. Genuine outreach must establish a relationship on common ground and build a partnership that will benefit all concerned.

So to that end, I have already reoriented the RNC away from “doing outreach” and towards building coalitions instead — moving beyond its comfort zone to create a relationship with diverse communities and constituencies. My goal: to advance freedom in the African-American community.

As the African-American middle class emerges and grows, the Republican Party wants to be a partner who works with you to put in place the tools necessary to sustain that growth and to bring out of poverty those so often left behind. I thank you for the opportunity to explain how my party is committed to continuing in that cause. And I thank you for your kind attention here today.

Certainly my visit here today does not represent some miraculous breakthrough in GOP-NAACP relations. This is the first baby step in many more baby steps to come. After all, we all know that old loyalties and attitudes die hard. But the question is, if the GOP is willing to take those steps, will the NAACP be willing to do the same?

As you start your second century, now is an opportune time for both the NAACP and Republicans to take hold of their political destinies and step together into a new partnership.

Think about it this way: if a black man can become chairman of the Republican National Committee, then anything is possible.

Congratulations; and may God continue his blessings upon your work.

A statewide Mason-Dixon poll released today shows Attorney General Bill McCollum leading Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink in the Florida Governor’s Race – 41 percent to 35 percent. General McCollum posted name recognition numbers near 90 percent, compared with CFO Sink, who barely broke 60 percent. Additionally, General McCollum receives four times the support among Democrats that CFO Sink does among Republicans and beats CFO Sink among Independents by an almost 2-1 margin, demonstrating his electability and appeal to Republicans, Democrats and Independents.

“As a female candidate seeking our state’s highest office, I am sure that Alex Sink personally understands the hurtful and inappropriate comments made by Governor Schweitzer,” said Chairman Greer. “CFO Sink has an opportunity to show Floridians, especially Florida’s women, that she won’t stand for this type of chauvinistic behavior. Sink should immediately demand an apology from Governor Schweitzer.”

The problems facing women running for office were vividly, if unintentionally, highlighted in Dan Balz's June 7 The Take column, "Close Races in Virginia, New Jersey May Be Indicators for 2010," in which Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer was quoted as praising Virginia gubernatorial candidate Terence R. McAuliffe as someone who, "when there's a bump in the road, he's not going to cry like a girl and quit."
First, the comment has to make you wonder how well Mr. Schweitzer, as head of the Democratic Governors Association, will encourage or work for female candidates. Then you have to wonder about Mr. Balz reporting on Mr. Schweitzer's remark without any comment. Would such a comment about a minority group be treated as a perfectly understandable description of what one does not wish to be? It is hard to believe that a year ago, Hillary Rodham Clinton was being pilloried for overcoming bumps in the road and continuing to fight in the presidential race. The last thing I wonder is whether The Post will publish any commentary on this latest piece of practical sexism

“It is absolutely ridiculous that President Obama has appointed, and will most likely continue to appoint, countless czars which are nothing more than symbolic figureheads to demonstrate to the American people that he is concerned about the buzz word of the day–border czar, regulation czar, infotech czar, urban czar, the list goes on and even includes a “compensation czar,” responsible for deciding the salaries of the top 100 employees of publicly traded companies!”

In over 300 years, the Romanov Dynasty ruled Russia with only 18 czars, yet in only five short months, the United States now has an excess of over 20 czars. What happened to cutting back and doing more with less?”

“These absurd positions do nothing but take away from the transparency that President Obama promised the American people. Who do the czars report to? The President? Members of the Cabinet? Congress? Six Months into Term, Is Kosmas Still Unprepared on Space Issues?

Washington – NASA jobs on Florida’s Space Coast are being threatened by congressional Democrats (Walter Alarkon, “NASA states going ballistic over cash cuts,” The Hill, 6/11/09), and it’s happening on the watch of Suzanne Kosmas.

“Suzanne Kosmas promised her constituents that she would protect NASA funding and local jobs, and she has failed,” said Ken Spain, NRCC Communications Director. “Representing a NASA district as a member of the majority is a big responsibility, and Suzanne Kosmas just doesn’t appear to be cut out for it.”

BACKGROUND:

• A 2008 Orlando Sentinel article indicated that Kosmas was unprepared on space issues:
“But attacking [Kosmas’ opponent] on space could be risky for Kosmas, a real-estate broker with little background in the issue. A recent interview indicates she knows far less about NASA and the space program than does [her opponent]…In response to questions, for example, Kosmas was unsure how much NASA spends on climate research compared to other priorities. • During this year’s stimulus debate, Kosmas put party loyalty ahead of NASA funding:

Congressman from ACORN Strikes Again

Tallahassee–Republican Party of Florida Chairman Jim Greer today released the following statement regarding Congressman Alan Grayson’s $350,000 earmark for the controversial Florida Civil Rights Association whose founder, J. Willie David, a former bail bondsman, has been accused of stealing money from clients and extorting money from orphans.

“It seems the Congressman from ACORN has struck again,” said Chairman Greer. “In an attempt to funnel $350,000 of taxpayer money to a friend and ex-bail bondsman/would-be orphan profiteer who hustles the poor and takes advantage of central Florida’s less fortunate, he has once again proven he is an embarrassment to his constituents.”

“It is time for Alan Grayson to take a stand and serve the citizens of central Florida in the way that they deserve,” continued Greer. “And sending $350,000 of their hard earned money to an organization run by a personal friend and professional con-artist is a troublesome lapse in judgment and unfair to his constituents.”

Meek Supports Importing Gitmo Detainees to FL?

“Yesterday we saw the first Guantanamo Bay detainee plead not-guilty to the al-Qaida bombings of U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, attacks that killed more than 224 people, including 12 Americans. Ahmed Ghailani is the first of many terrorists who will face trial here in the United States as the Obama Administration moves forward with plans to close the military prison at Guantanamo Bay, the current home to dozens of terrorists responsible for the deaths of hundreds of Americans, and the destruction of billions of dollars of property.

“Does Kendrick Meek support the Obama Administration’s plans to bring those terrorists to the United States, and if so, would he bring them to Florida? Recent polling shows that by a margin of 2-1, Americans do not believe Guantanamo detainees should be moved to the United States.

“Will Meek go against the will of the people? Kendrick Meek needs to come clean and explain his position on allowing terrorists to be brought to Florida. If he doesn’t support the Obama Administration’s plan, now is the time to speak up – Floridians are waiting. If Meek can’t show leadership as a Congressman, he won’t show leadership in the U.S Senate.”

Dear Republican Leaders,

I am writing you today to discuss matters that I feel are important to us as a Party and ultimately, our great state.

As many of you may have heard, I recently announced that, while I gave it much consideration, I have decided against running for Governor in 2010. I came to this decision after a great deal of discussion with my friends, family and supporters and wanted to let you, as leaders of our Party, in on my decision making process.

I have always believed that primary campaigns are a healthy part of the Republican Party.
Primaries foster healthy policy discussions, energize both the volunteer and donor corps and strengthen candidates for the General election. While I do believe in all of these things, I also believed that in making my decision to run for Governor, I needed to take a long look at the particular circumstances that our Party faces in the upcoming election.

Upon taking inventory of the current environment, I concluded that running for Governor was not the appropriate thing for me to do at this time. I came to this conclusion because the Democrat Party has clearly solidified behind their candidate for Governor. In tough economic times like these, the last thing our Party needs is a protracted Primary battle where we spend all of our resources fighting with each other, rather than focusing on the General election. The bankruptcy of General Motors is an unfortunate circumstance for our nation. My heart goes out to the individuals and families, particularly those here in Florida, affected by GM’s bankruptcy and the ensuing government takeover.

Back in February, President Obama said the federal government needed to bailout GM and Chrysler with $20 billion of taxpayer money – now both are bankrupt. President Obama has assured Americans that he didn’t want to be in the business of making cars, yet the federal government now owns 60 percent of GM.

The Obama administration’s involvement in GM’s bankruptcy means taxpayers will spend $30 billion more to help GM to reorganize. This regrettable incident is more proof that the ‘change’ President Obama promised for America is really a dangerous expansion of government and stands in stark contrast to the values of less taxing, less spending, and less government that our Republican leaders fight for each day. Chairman Greer Announces RPOF Staff Changes

Tallahassee–Republican Party of Florida Chairman Jim Greer today announced staff changes for the RPOF Political, Finance, Field Operations and Communications Departments. The Chairman appointed Bret Prater, a veteran political operative, to serve as Political Director, promoted Amanda Wheeler to serve as Finance Director and Brad Herold to Deputy Director of Field Operations. Chairman Greer restructured the Communications Department, promoting Katie Gordon to Communications Director, Jennifer McMillan to Deputy Director of Communications and Carla Rivera to Deputy Director of Communications, overseeing Hispanic Media Relations.

“Throughout 2009, the RPOF is focused on voter registration, technology, coalitions building, and youth outreach,” said Greer. “The reorganization of these key departments maximizes our talent and resources in the off-year, and will lead to greater success in 2010.”

“Chairman Greer announced today’s staff changes as the conclusion of a reorganization of the RPOF Political, Finance, Field Operations and Communications Departments,” said RPOF Executive Director Delmar Johnson. “The new structure will allow for a better utilization of staff and resources during the off year, in preparation for the 2010 Election next November.”

Bret Prater, Political Director, most recently served the Republican Party as a coordinator of the RPOF’s Get Out the Vote Program, specifically managing a statewide team focused on absentee ballot chase efforts. Prater previously served as the Deputy Director of External Affairs in the Executive Office of Governor Crist and as a Special Assistant to the Governor for a 37 county region in North Florida. During the 2006 Election Cycle, Prater organized the RPOF’s statewide precinct walker program and served on the Charlie Crist Inaugural Committee. He spent much of 2005 and 2006 organizing the political activities for Florida’s largest professional trade association, the Florida Assoc iation of Realtors. Prater worked with the Bush/Cheney ‘04 team, where he served as a Victory Field Director in North Florida and was also a grassroots organizer for the Bush/Brogan ‘02 Gubernatorial Campaign in Miami-Dade County.

Amanda Wheeler, Finance Director, most recently served as the RPOF’s Finance Liaison, working with Chairman Greer, RPOF Finance Chairman Ambassador John Rood, Finance Co-Chairman Steve Burton, members of the RPOF Statewide Finance Committee and senior management to develop the Party’s statewide finance strategy. Wheeler is responsible for coordinating every aspect of major donor events here in Florida and across the country. She is a graduate of the Florida State University.

Brad Herold, Deputy Director of Field Operations, joined the RPOF Team in 2007, after serving in the Executive Office of Governor Crist. As the Deputy Director of Field Operations, Herold will assist Bret Prater and Deputy Executive Director of Operations John Davis with the coordination of 67 Republican Executive Committees as well as Republican clubs and organizations throughout Florida. The department manages the RPOF Field Coordinators and works with members of the State Executive Committee to ensure that the Chairman’s initiatives are carried out across the state. Herold will take on additional responsibilities including graphic design and multimedia production.

The Field Operations Department is responsible for overseeing the 2009 RPOF Youth Initiative. Led by recently appointed Youth Outreach Coordinators, Tim Nungesser and Kathryn Salerno, the RPOF Youth Outreach Initiative is a comprehensive program aimed at encouraging young Floridians between the ages of 15 and 35 to consider joining the Republican Party. The program includes multiple voter registration and technology components and will culminate with a statewide conference this summer.

Katie Gordon, Communications Director, most recently served as Press Secretary of the Republican Party of Florida. Gordon rejoined the RPOF Team in January 2008, after coordinating communications for the Florida Office of the Fred Thompson for President Campaign. She previously served as a speechwriter in the Press and Communications Office of Governor Crist and worked as a Communications Assistant on the Crist Transition Team and at the Republican Party of Florida. Gordon graduated from the Florida State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science and History and a Master’s Degree in Political Science.

Jennifer McMillan, Deputy Communications Director, has served as the RPOF Press Assistant for nearly two years. In her new capacity, McMillan will oversee e-campaigns and new media, taking on a leadership role in the Party’s continued efforts to upgrade technology and diversify communication strategies. McMillan is a graduate of the Florida State University.

Carla Rivera, Deputy Communications Director overseeing Hispanic Media Relations, will continue to coordinate the RPOF’s outreach to Hispanic media and will remain the Hispanic spokesperson for the organization. Rivera is a graduate of Florida International University and is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Linguistics as well as a Certificate in Translating and Interpreting.

RPOF Launches Statewide Voter Registration Initiative

Tallahassee–Republican Party of Florida Chairman Jim Greer today launched the RPOF’s Statewide Voter Registration Initiative, laying the groundwork for the Get Out the Vote (GOTV) efforts of the 2010 General Election.

“We must not allow the success Democrats have seen in voter registration in recent months to lead to success at the ballot box,” said Chairman Greer. “With a U.S Senate Seat and four open Cabinet races in 2010, we must maintain our focus on the general election next November and work to build our infrastructure of registered voters and grassroots volunteers who will implement our nationally recognized GOTV Program.”

Voter registration is the basis of the RPOF’s nationally recognized GOTV Program. Throughout the last few days of the election cycle, the RPOF enlists a statewide network of volunteers who conduct a wide range of GOTV activities. This year, the RPOF began the process early. Rather than hiring a GOTV Director to implement a plan from Tallahassee, Chairman Greer has distributed a Voter Registration Survey to the Republican Executive Committee Chairman, State Committeeman, and State Committeewoman in each county to gather specific information regarding the voter registration needs of individual counties. Later this summer, the RPOF will deploy Voter Registration Strike Teams to each county to provide training for grassroots leaders and volunteers, based on those specific goals. Following the RPOF Voter Registration Strike Team, county leaders will be responsible for imple menting unique voter registration and volunteer recruitment goals. The initiative begins this weekend with a Voter Registration Strike Team attending the Okaloosa County Billy Bowlegs Festival.

“A successful GOTV Program takes months to plan, build and manage,” said Chairman Greer. “This year, we are working from the ground up, starting with the county leadership. Local leaders will provide insight and information, suggest a timeframe and training schedule, work with an RPOF Voter Registration Strike Team and finally carry out an aggressive calendar of voter registration activities focused on local needs.”

Florida led the nation in the number of volunteer voter contacts six of the last seven weeks of the 2008 Election Cycle. Through extensive volunteer efforts, the RPOF contacted more than four million voters in 2008, more than ever before. During the 2008 GOVT Program, volunteers made over one million phone calls and knocked on more than 100,000 doors. The RPOF also created a new Absentee Ballot Request Walk Program and implemented Absentee Chase efforts, which were nationalized by the Republican National Committee. Additionally, the RPOF installed upgraded phone systems with advanced data capture methods to better target voters and launched a text message pilot program to contact volunteers and voters.

“Democrats have long held a voter registration advantage in the State of Florida, yet because of our successful GOTV Program Republicans hold the Governor’s Mansion and three of four Cabinet positions, as well as majorities in the State House, State Senate and Congressional Delegation,” continued Chairman Greer. “Last year the GOP had a tough time in other states, but as Republicans in the State of Florida, we have much to be proud of. While we were all disappointed to see Florida turn blue at the Presidential level, the Democrats were not able to ride President Obama’s coattails into the down ticket races. In a year with record voter turnout and with the best ground game the Democrats have ever had, not a single Republican incumbent in the Florida House or Senate was defeated. Despite Campaigning as a “Watchdog” Trial Attorney, Grayson Skips Critical Hearing on Progress of Taxpayer Dollars
Washington – It seems Alan Grayson can’t live up to his harsh rhetoric from the campaign trail last year. While he claimed he could clean up Washington, he was notably absent from the most recent subcommittee hearing to track the billions of dollars in stimulus funds that were approved by Congressional Democrats.

“All the talk of supposed oversight during Alan Grayson’s campaign was obviously hot air,” said NRCC Communications Director Ken Spain. “Instead of handing over a trillion-dollar blank check to Nancy Pelosi, Alan Grayson should be ensuring that every single taxpayer dollar is being spent wisely and not on pork-barrel projects. If Alan Grayson isn’t interested in holding the federal bureaucracy accountable then who is going to hold him accountable?”

Background:
The hearings, entitled “Follow the Money,” allow members of the subcommittee to question the officials in charge with distributing the stimulus funds to the various states. At the subcommittee’s second hearing, “Follow the Money II,” only 30% of the subcommittee’s members showed up, with Grayson being unaccounted for:
“Just three of the 10 members bothered to show up for the subcommittee's second meeting, dramatically titled ‘Follow the Money Part II.’…

“While Mr. Miller and the panel's top Republican were there, only Rep. Kathy Dahlkemper, Pennsylvania Democrats, came to the hearing. Absent were Democratic Reps. Steven R. Rothman of New Jersey, Lincoln Davis of Tennessee, Charles A. To make matters worse, it was reported today that the details of the stimulus funds may not be released entirely until spring 2010:
“Although President Obama has vowed that citizens will be able to track ‘every dime’ of the $787 billion stimulus bill, a government website dedicated to the spending won't have details on contracts and grants until October and may not be complete until next spring — halfway through the program, administration officials said.” (“Details thin on stimulus contracts,” USA Today, 05/06/2009)

This is particularly embarrassing to Grayson after DCCC Chairman Chris Van Hollen touted Grayson’s ability to provide oversight and transparency for the American people:
“‘People are willing to make public investments if they know their money is being well spent. That's where Alan Grayson comes in. He understands it's important to invest in the public good. But he doesn't want to be wasting a penny of taxpayer money.’” (National Journal, 03/14/2009)

The nonpartisan research group Center for Media and Public Affairs along with California's Chapman University released a study that found the nightly newscasts devoted 27 hours, 44 minutes to Pres. Obama's presidency in his first 50 days. That compares to 7 hours, 42 minutes for Pres. George W. Bush and 15 hours, 2 minutes for Pres. Bill Clinton during the first 50 days of their first terms.

Not only has Obama gotten more coverage, but that coverage has been more positive than his predecessors.

On the ABC, CBS, and NBC evening newscasts, 58% of all evaluations of the president and his policies have been favorable, while 42% were unfavorable. That compares with 33% positive in the comparable period of Bush's tenure and 44% positive for Pres. Clinton. …

Two Years Later, This War Is Not Lost

As you may know, today is Patriots’ Day, the anniversary of the Battles of Lexington and Concord, the first battles of the American Revolutionary War. Today as we remember our proud heritage as Americans, we are grateful for those first Patriots who years ago were willing to give their lives for the cause of freedom. We are eternally grateful to those brave soldiers for the privilege to call ourselves Americans and for the opportunity to live, work and raise our families in the type of freedom others around the world can only dream of.

For this reason, I remind you that two years ago today, rather than honoring the service and sacrifice to those who have given their lives to defeat the threat of terrorism and bring freedom to the Iraqi people, Democrat Senator Harry Reid, the majority leader of the United States Senate, declared the War in Iraq lost. Harry Reid calls the war lost and the troop surge a failure. Well Senator Reid, I beg to differ. Today on Patriots’ Day, I am grateful to our brave men and women in uniform. They are aren’t kids who didn’t do well in school and “got stuck” in Iraq as President Obama once said, or “poor kids from Mississippi, Texas and Alabama who couldn't get a decent job” as the New York Times would like to think. Instead, they are members of the most well trained, educated and elite fighting force the world as ever seen.

Colonel Oliver North reminds us that initially the United States Military was outnumbered nearly three to one by Saddam Hussein's military, yet it took U.S. troops just three weeks to liberate Baghdad. No military force in history has accomplished that much so fast with so few casualties.

Today while we honor those who fought freedom’s first battle, we remember the men and women who continue that fight today. We support their cause and continue to express our gratitude for their sacrifice.

Miami–Republican Party of Florida Chairman Jim Greer today responded to Congressman Kendrick Meek’s Senate Campaign stop in Tallahassee:

“It is interesting that Congressman Meek, who recently supported increasing federal spending by trillions of dollars, chose the location where Florida lawmakers are faced with the challenge of cutting billions from the state budget to discuss his bid for the United States Senate,” said Chairman Greer.

While Florida lawmakers painstakingly review every line of the state budget to ensure funding for critical services while maintaining a balanced budget, Congressman Meek supports a national deficit likely to reach its highest post-World War II level and voted for an amendment to the Fiscal Year 2010 Budget Resolution to set even higher taxes and increase spending plans so outrageous that most of his Democrat colleagues voted against it.

“Just last month, Congressman Meek said he wanted to bring spending under control and bring down the deficit, yet Meek helped House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats in Washington pass the largest tax increase in American history, double the size of the national deficit, and create more debt than every other U.S. President from George Washington to George W. Kissimmee–Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum met with the Osceola Pastors’ Coalition yesterday to discuss consumer protection issues. The bilingual educational session was sponsored by the Republican Party of Florida. General McCollum was joined by Osceola County Commission Chairman John Quiñones, Kissimmee Mayor Jim Swan, Kissimmee Commissioner Art Otero, Kissimmee Commissioner Carlos Irizarry and Osceola School Board Member Julius Melendez as well as pastors and ministers of several churches in the City of Kissimmee and the Osceola County area.

“I am pleased to be here today to discuss the important work we are undertaking to protect consumers, prevent fraud in our communities and on the Internet, and prosecute those responsible for illegally taking advantage of other Floridians,” said General McCollum. “I am hopeful that our discussion here today will lead to greater awareness and prevention of fraud.”
The bilingual education session sought to raise awareness of the problem of fraud in the Hispanic community in Central Florida. A number of incidents have occurred in recent weeks, including an individual posing as a pastor in order to swindle $8,000 dollars from a Hispanic citizen in Osceola County. The Republican Party of Florida believes that faith-based organizations are a critical component of maintaining an awareness of this type of crime in communities across our state.

“I appreciate the good work General McCollum and Republican elected officials throughout Florida have done to make addressing this issue a priority,” said Chairman Greer. “We aren’t just Republicans on Election Day. We must practice what we preach year in and year out, and part of that message is that government can only go so far – after that it is the responsibility of community and faith-based organizations to take what they have learned here today and work to inform communities about the dangers of fraud.”

Greer Calls on Sink to Stop Politically Motivated Outrage, Fund Critical Program

Tallahassee– Republican Party of Florida Chairman Jim Greer today called on Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink to stop her politically driven outrage against Florida’s Child Predator Cybercrime Unit and continue to fund awareness of this critical program.

“Last summer, Alex Sink had no problem authorizing a contract to produce these public service announcements that inform Florida’s children and families about the dangers of sexual predators,” said Chairman Greer. “She also approved every single expenditure to each television station that aired the announcement.”

Through a spokesperson, CFO Sink recently responded to questions about her participation in producing and airing public service announcements that advertise the services of Florida’s Child Predator Cybercrime Unit, stating the ads were “not the best use of state funds.” The contract to secure production of the PSA was cleared through the Sink’s Bureau of Auditing and notes that the grant ‘met all review criteria.’ Each week when Florida television stations received payments for these PSAs, they were directly audited and approved by Alex Sink and her office.

“When the only office she sought was re-election as Florida’s Chief Financial Officer, Alex Sink was on board, 100 percent in support of this critical education initiative. Now, as a potential gubernatorial candidate, she has joined the Florida Democrat Party in an effort to destroy the credibility this effective program to further her own political agenda,” concluded Greer.

After consulting with Sink’s spokesperson, the Miami Herald recently reported:

“The bills are paid by Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink, whose office has little discretion over what it can or cannot pay.” (Miami Herald, 3/20/09)

“If this statement is true, and Sink – the Chief Financial Officer of the State of Florida – has no authority to approve expenditures, how did she suddenly gain the authority to block funding for this critical education initiative by demanding additional ‘documentation?’” asked Chairman Greer. “Alex Sink is clearly playing politics with this funding and instead listen to the public safety experts who have endorsed this worthwhile program.”

Tallahassee—On Monday Democrat Senator Bill Nelson said it will take a magician—specifically, Merlin—to pull off President Obama’s budget.

When questioned about the massive budget in an interview with FOX News, Senator Nelson replied, “How we’re going to pull this off, it’s going to take Merlin the Magician.”

Nelson, a member of the Senate Budget Committee, cautioned that the Obama budget will have to be modified due to projections that federal deficits over the next ten years will exceed Obama’s projections by $2.3 trillion. Senator Nelson notes, “we’re going to have to go back and rework this whole thing…” Nelson then suggested higher taxes, saying, “…you’re going to have to speed up the revenues coming in from such things as possibly a cigarette tax, possibly…cap and trade…”

The Wall Street Journal tells Nelson, “Getting cap-and-trade legislation – opponents call it “cap and tax” — and a higher cigarette tax through Congress, however, might require more than one Merlin.”

I’m Alex Sink and I’m Kind of a Big Deal

Tallahassee—The St. Pete Times reports today that Florida Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink is essentially campaigning for statewide office already…from her current statewide office. Which means taxpayers are paying for her campaign.

The Times notes that Sink is staffing up with Democrat operatives from Planned Parenthood and the Democrat Congressional Campaign Committee. The article also highlights Sink’s recent high-profile political attacks on Republican elected officials and says, “She has added veteran political hands to her office payroll. And at a time when many state politicians are consumed with the budget crisis in Tallahassee, Sink has been organizing campaign fundraising receptions from Tallahassee to Tampa to Miami.”

“Alex Sink is clearly running for statewide office, and she’s doing it on the taxpayers’ dime through a not-so-stealthy stealth campaign run out of the first floor of Florida’s Capitol building,” said RPOF Chairman Jim Greer. “Her campaign staff should be moved off the state payroll immediately so that Florida’s taxpayers do not have to foot any more of the bill for Alex Sink’s campaign.”

The St. Pete Times continues, “In January, her office issued nine press releases, compared with 15 so far this month. In recent days she has been front and center at a PTA rally in Tallahassee, and holding news conferences…She has brought in a politically savvy new deputy chief of staff, Stephanie Grutman, who previously worked with U.S. Rep. Ron Klein and with Planned Parenthood. Her new communications director, Jennings, is a veteran of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.”

“Alex Sink has her campaign staff in place and she has held at least three fundraisers this month alone,” concluded Greer. “Alex Sink is running an active campaign and Florida’s taxpayers are footing the bill.”

Yesterday, Sink suggested that it might be a good idea for the state to buy toxic assets that banks and private investors won’t touch.

As a former bank executive, Alex Sink should know the perilous potential outcome of even considering purchasing toxic assets, which could damage the entire state’s credit and hurt taxpayers.”

Union Bosses Versus Union Members?

As the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) protest in front of Majority Leader Adam Hasner’s (R- Delray Beach) district office today in South Florida against preserving and protecting Floridians’ right to a secret ballot, the country's fastest-growing union is engaged in its own labor dispute with employees it is seeking to lay off.
The Washington Post reported today the Service Employees International Union has notified the union that represents about 220 of the SEIU's national field staff members and organizers that it is laying off 75 of the employees.

“It’s ironic that the SEIU staff members are losing their jobs and suing the union for unfair labor practices,” said Leader Hasner. “Unions are supposed to protect their members, not fire them.”

The article went on to say, “The workers union's leaders say that the SEIU is engaging in the same kind of practices that some businesses use: laying off workers without proper notice, contracting out work to temporary-staffing firms, banning union activities and reclassifying workers to reduce union numbers.”

"It's completely hypocritical," said Malcolm Harris, president of the workers union. "This is the union that's been at the forefront of progressive issues, around ensuring that working people and working families are taken care of, but when it comes to the people that work for SEIU, they haven't set the same standards."

TALLAHASSEE- This afternoon, having reached the conclusion of their three week review of existing sales tax exemptions, House Democrats on the Finance & Tax Council are ignoring the advice of Minority Leader Franklin Sands and are following Minority Leader-designate Ron Saunders’ playbook in refusing to produce even a single tax exemption to repeal.

Minority Leader-designate Saunders’ do-nothing plan for House Democrats was clear:
“Rep. Ron Saunders, D-Key West, said he would urge Democrats to keep the exemptions, saying it's up to the Republican majority to figure out how to balance the budget.”

Saunders’ strategy directly contradicts the message from Minority Leader Sands on dealing with sales tax exemptions.

House Democrats, turning away from Minority Leader Sands who says he wants the minority party to engage in a constructive role, and embracing the blame game fingerpointing strategy of Minority Leader-designate Saunders, is surprising considering their previous outspoken support for repeal of sales tax exemptions.

With 46 days left in this year’s legislative session, Floridians, frustrated by the Minority Leader-designate’s strategy to not participate in the decisions facing Florida, may be asking House Democrats a version of the same question that the Minority Leader is asking right now: “Why are you here?”

Statement on the Passing of Dr. David Langston

Tallahassee- Republican Party of Florida Chairman Jim Greer and Representative Jennifer Carroll (R-Jacksonville), Chairman of the African American Leadership Council today released the following statement regarding the passing of Dr. David Langston:

“With the passing of Dr. Langston, the Republican family has lost one our own,” said Chairman Greer. “He was a man of great character who devoted his life to bettering his community. He will truly be missed, and our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and community during this difficult time.”

“I am deeply saddened by the untimely death of one of the most dedicated black Republicans that I have ever known, Dr. David Langston,” stated Representative Carroll. “David was a dear friend. I admired him for his commitment and diligent work supporting President George W. Bush and Former Governor Jeb Bush to further the Republican movement. As an advocate for underprivileged children and a champion of education, Dr. Langston spent his free time giving back to his community, and those efforts will live on with his memory.”

Funeral services for Dr. Langston will take place Sunday, March 15 2009 at 3 pm EST in the Port St. Joe High School gym.

Dear RNC Members:

Over the past few weeks, our newly-elected RNC Chairman Michael Steele has come under assault from a number of fronts. While we can and should expect attacks like this from the Democrats, it is unacceptable when they come from within our own Party. What I find so disturbing is that some Republicans cannot see the absolute necessity of providing unwavering loyalty and support to Chairman Steele as he embarks upon leading the Republican Party into the future.

In less than 45 days, Chairman Steele has led a top-to-bottom review at the Republican National Committee and wiped the slate completely clean, as many members of the RNC and Republicans nationwide called for. As a member of his transition team, I have seen first-hand the thorough evaluation that has occurred at the RNC: not one stone has been left unturned in our efforts to maximize each dollar, find the best staff members, revamp coalitions and communications, and bring a top-notch finance team on board. As anyone with business experience knows, transitioning from one CEO to another and restructuring a major organization takes time and should not be rushed to be successful. Effectively evaluating and implementing best practices from the top to the bottom is a lengthy process, and doing it the wrong way can cause irreparable harm.

Doing it the right way allows for remarkable changes, most recently illustrated by the hiring of Ken McKay as chief of staff . McKay served as Rhode Island Gov. Don Carcieri’s chief of staff and served as the campaign manager for two successful gubernatorial races in one of the bluest states in the nation. Bringing McKay on board reinforces the considerable political acumen of the new RNC Chairman.

Ultimately, we can and will have differences of opinion on the issues, and that is healthy for a party that seeks to grow and diversify. As Chairman of one of the largest state parties and an RNC member, I welcome this dialogue. However, it is not constructive to launch assaults on the transition process or promote division within our party by openly criticizing our new Chairman.

The RNC as a whole—including Republican Congressional leaders, grassroots activists, and Republicans nationwide—must speak forcefully in support of Chairman Steele and drown out the vocal minority. To do anything less is a disservice to our party.

Be patient and let our Chairman build the administration that is right for him and right for our Party. He will accept no less, and nor should we.

Vice President Joe Biden's recent visit to Miami Beach to meet with union leaders wasn't such a secret. But as the labor bosses wined and dined at the posh Fontainebleau Hotel, with its 10 pools and 40,000 square foot spa, what they weren't letting anyone know is that they were plotting to steal your guaranteed right to a secret ballot. And now they are only one vote away in the U.S. Senate from doing it.

That's right. These labor union bosses are on the verge of passing legislation called the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA) and denying employees the right to cast their ballot in private in union organizing elections. Rather than holding a monitored workplace election using secret ballots as has been the case for decades, under this proposal the union would automatically be created in businesses with more than ten employees once the union collects "authorization cards" signed by a majority of the employees. No questions. No debate. No secret ballot. You're unionized.

The right to vote in private, free from coercion or intimidation, is one of the pillars of our nation's democracy and it is so fundamental that it transcends partisanship. Even long-time labor supporters such as George McGovern and Rev. Al Sharpton have voiced their opposition to this undemocratic measure. They agree that workers deserve the right to hear all sides of the issues, the right to question relevant people, and the right to decide individually after an open and honest process.

And while efforts to oppose EFCA in Washington continue, I am now taking action as part of a national effort underway in ten other states to Save Our Secret Ballot so that in Florida we can protect and preserve the fundamental right to a secret ballot and democratic workplace elections.

State Senator Garrett Richter and I are sponsoring joint resolutions- HJR 1013/SJR 1908- which, with voter approval, would amend Florida's constitution "to protect and preserve the fundamental right of individuals to vote by a secret ballot" in all elections required by federal, state or local law. Most would assume that voting by a secret ballot is already a constitutionally guaranteed right, but it is not.

Save our Secret Ballot is not an anti-union proposal. It is a pro-worker protection proposal. Intimidation and harassment is wrong whether it is coming from a union boss or a management boss. With a secret ballot, Florida's workers are the boss.
It’s no secret that our state and our nation are currently facing unprecedented economic challenges. Protecting worker's rights is essential if we want to create and protect jobs and get our economy moving again.

Recently, the Democrats in the Florida House of Representatives elected their party leader using a secret ballot process. If choosing their workplace leader by secret ballot is good enough for Democratic politicians in Tallahassee, then guaranteeing the right to secret ballot elections should be the right thing to do for the workers of our state.

Electing those who represent us at work is just as important as electing those who represent us in government. Voters cast their votes free from fear of retribution from their government, and they deserve the same right to be free of fear of retaliation from their union, their employer and their fellow employees.

Because if we don't stand up to protect the right to a secret ballot today, what rights will we be fighting to hold onto tomorrow?

Katon Dawson tells Geraghty: "I support Michael Steele. Our Committee elected him knowing that he can lead us during this critical time for our Party. The people behind this anonymous rumor are clearly intent on dividing the Republican National Committee and our Party at a time when we need to be united."

And Matt Cooper points out that an ouster would require a two-thirds vote.

While American taxpayers are looking for answers regarding the billions of dollars in earmarks included in the new $787 billion federal stimulus package as well as the $410 billion omnibus bill signed today by President Obama, Office of Management and Budget Director Peter Orszag had this to say….

“The four Florida Democrats who put partisan politics over Floridians’ precious right to vote by secret ballot have some explaining to do to their constituents,” noted RPOF Chairman Jim Greer. “Representatives Oscar Braynon, Adam Fetterman, Bill Heller, and Kelly Skidmore just voted not only against secret ballots, but against our efforts to strengthen Florida’s economy and create new jobs.”

The U.S. Supreme court has ruled that state law may prevail if it safeguards important interests and does not disrupt the federal regulatory scheme. Leader Hasner and State Senator Garrett Richter (R-Naples), who has filed SJR 1908 in the Florida Senate to place the amendment on the ballot, are working with Save our Secret Ballot, a national organization dedicated to educating Americans about the continued need for a secret ballot wherever state or federal law requires elections.

Tallahassee--Florida Congressman Ron Klein has announced that he will not be a co-sponsor of the card check bill officially introduced in Congress today, even though he supported it just one year ago.

"Ron Klein must clarify his exact position on this controversial bill, which seeks to strip American workers of their right to vote by secret ballot," noted RPOF Chairman Jim Greer. "Will Klein stand up and protect Florida workers and vote against card check, or will he pacify Big Labor bosses and vote for it?"

Klein is one of several Democrats who supported card check just a year ago but who have decided not to co-sponsor the bill this year. Card check is an effort by labor unions and the Democrat majorities in Congress to shred the fundamental right to vote by secret ballot. Republicans, including House Majority Leader Adam Hasner (R-Delray Beach) and Senator Garrett Richter (R-Naples), in conjunction with the Save Our Secret Ballot initiative, believe that a voter's right to a secret ballot is an essential and fundamental principle in our society, encouraging broader voter participation. Without the ability to vote secretly, individual political freedom will decline and be subject to threats and intimidation by those who want voters to pursue a specific course of action or ideology.

"Ron Klein may attempt to quietly disengage from his recent support of card check, but voters know the truth: Klein supported this assault on Floridians' rights just a year ago," concluded Greer. "Now the question is, will he cave in to out-of-state union bosses and vote for it?"

Labor unions: Vote is sacred

“Try as they might, unions should be having a difficult time selling a key feature of their misnamed Employee Free Choice Act. The act would allow unions to dispense with secret ballots if they accumulate signed cards from a majority of the workers. They still have today's option of a secret election, but it's doubtful that would ever happen. Why risk it? What the unions portray as leveling the playing field actually tilts it their way. The bill could more accurately be described as the Meaningless Vote Act, since votes wouldn't be needed. Card checks would be public, thus exposing workers to pressure from both sides. As it now stands, a worker may sign a card to allow an election and then vote his conscience in private. Card check makes an employee's wishes public, thus becoming an invitation for intimidation. Card check is not the only egregious element in the proposed bill. Another item would require companies and newly certified unions to enter mediation, followed by binding arbitration, if they cannot reach agreement on a contract after just 90 days of negotiations … If Nelson intends to represent his right to work state, then he needs to oppose this law as it is currently written. A secret ballot should be ensured. Mediation and arbitration should not be mandatory. And penalties should be assessed equitably. This is bad law. But it also will be bad politics if the Democrats go through with this. Every fair-minded person should be appalled. No matter what your opinion is of unions, the proposal to bypass secret votes ought to stir opposition.”

Over the past week, new RNC Chairman Michael Steele has walked through the fire, or more accurately, through a shooting gallery inside the Beltway. To be clear, some of this was self-inflicted. As the chairman has said, he made some missteps in a few media appearances. Live and learn.

Behind the noise however, there is a different scene unfolding, and one that should give hope to Republicans everywhere, or at least Republicans outside the beltway. For the first time ever, the new chairman is conducting a complete and thorough overhaul of all party operations. Anyone associated with the Republican campaigns of the past few cycles knows the real truth: Our party has been out-gunned, out-worked and "out-technologied.”

The chairman promised to clean house at the RNC if he won. He did, and he did. This has led to some serious griping inside the Beltway. Many were lying in wait, hoping he would stumble, so they could pounce. He did, and they did.

As part of Steele’s transition at the RNC, 10 members of the RNC have descended from around the country onto the headquarters at 310 First St. Their mission has been to conduct a thorough forensic audit of all the functions of each department — everything from finance to communications to research to politics. Every line item in the budget has been scrubbed; every position in the organizational chart has been reviewed.

This process was completed on time at the end of February. Now comes the hard part — taking the recommendations of this ten-member transition team and melding them into a new RNC that will do more with less and move the party to the place where we can compete and win in the 2010 elections.

Change is never easy, of course, and many feel threatened by it. Steele’s election as chairman of the Republican Party was a shock to the system for many of the Republican ruling class, the old guard in Washington. Over the past week, countless anonymous sources have brought out the long knives. Indeed, over the past week, the empire has struck back.

To be clear, some of the criticisms have been legitimate. This process has not been perfect. This new administration at the RNC has made mistakes, and all of us on Team Steele will make more, and we will own up to them.

That said, the vast majority of RNC members, both old and new, both those who supported Steele and those who did not, are on board with this overhaul of party operations. There is great unanimity on one thing: The 2006 and 2008 elections were not just bad, they were disastrous. Staying the course is not an option.

The best news is this — over the course of the past month, there is increasing evidence that the Republican Party as a whole is once again finding its voice. With 99 percent of elected Republicans in Washington standing on principle against the so-called stimulus package, the unprecedented expansion of government and wasteful spending, Republicans are coalescing.

We did not get into this mess in a just a few months, and we won’t get out of it in just a few weeks. But the seeds of the comeback are being sown. 2010 will be a different story.

The Miami Herald takes a look at House Democrat Leader Franklin Sands, who illustrates the leadership vacuum facing Democrats in Florida:

"...As a scrum of reporters jostled for sound bites after the governor's annual address last week, House Democratic leader Franklin Sands hung back, despite an aide's suggestion that he join colleagues holding court.

Earlier, the 68-year-old lawmaker had deferred to a lower-ranking colleague to give the party's videotaped response to the speech.

Sands is the only South Florida Democrat in leadership, but he's more frequently pegged as the self-made Weston millionaire who lost his life savings in the global Bernard Madoff scandal.

..."For Rep. Sands to be relevant, his challenge is to offer real ideas and solutions, and he's yet to demonstrate that,'' said Republican Rep. Adam Hasner of Delray Beach.

...In an election that saw record-setting, Barack Obama-fueled turnout, the party picked up only one House seat. (During Gelber's term, Democrats won nine over two years.)

..."The goal was to increase our numbers, and it didn't happen," said Rep. Perry Thurston of Fort Lauderdale. "We needed a more focused approach, as opposed to playing in a number of races."

One month after the election, Sands faced allegations -- which he denied -- that he was basing committee assignments to fellow Democrats on their party fundraising.
