HOUSE DEMOCRATS FIGHTING AGAINST FLORIDA WORKERS
~Continue to side with Union Bosses’ Attempts to Steal a Worker’s Right to Secret Ballot~
The facts on Save Our Secret Ballot are simple:
FACT: 80% of union members support protecting workers’ right to secret ballot.
FACT: The only thing that is anti-worker is the House Democrats’ continued attacks on Florida workers’ right to be free from fear of retaliation and intimidation from their union, their employer or from fellow employees.
FACT: House Democrats choose their leaders by secret ballot. It’s a shame they won’t give Florida workers the same protection.

FL Dems Locked Down Against Secret Ballot
FYI: The RPOF just issued the following release:
Florida House Dems Locked Down Against Secret Ballot
Tallahassee—House Democrats today voted against House Joint Resolution 1013 guaranteeing the right to vote by secret ballot in the House Governmental Affairs and Policy Committee. The joint resolution is sponsored by House Majority Leader Adam Hasner (R-Delray Beach) in an effort to protect Floridians’ fundamental right to a secret ballot.
“The four Florida Democrats who put partisan politics over Floridians’ precious right to vote by secret ballot have some explaining to do to their constituents,” noted RPOF Chairman Jim Greer. “Representatives Oscar Braynon, Adam Fetterman, Bill Heller, and Kelly Skidmore just voted not only against secret ballots, but against our efforts to strengthen Florida’s economy and create new jobs.”
HJR 1013 seeks to amend the Florida constitution in order to supersede any potential moves by the Democrat-controlled Congress that would harm an individual’s right to a secret ballot, both at the ballot box on Election Day and in the workplace. The U.S. Supreme court has ruled that state law may prevail if it safeguards important interests and does not disrupt the federal regulatory scheme. Leader Hasner and State Senator Garrett Richter (R-Naples), who has filed SJR 1908 in the Florida Senate to place the amendment on the ballot, are working with Save our Secret Ballot, a national organization dedicated to educating Americans about the continued need for a secret ballot wherever state or federal law requires elections.
“These four Democrat legislators sent a clear message today that they are with Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, and big labor, and against Florida workers,” concluded Leader Hasner. “They sent a message that harassment and intimidation are acceptable, that Floridians’ right to cast a secret ballot is not a fundamental principle in our society, and that more voter participation is not a priority for them. That message should be extremely alarming not only to their constituents, but to all Floridians.”

Orlando Sentinel: ACORN's voter registration sloppiness could create problems come Election Day
The community organizing group known as ACORN has been getting kicked around quite a bit on the presidential campaign trail lately. The group has no one but itself to blame.
The Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now says it has registered 1.3 million people for the Nov. 4 election. But its pattern of turning in some applications with false names and made-up addresses has spurred investigations in at least a half-dozen states.
ACORN says it has signed up 140,000 voters in Florida. Elections officials in Orange and Seminole counties have reported problems in hundreds of forms submitted by the group. Even if that's the extent of the trouble, instead of the tip of the iceberg, it's not insignificant in a state where 537 votes wound up deciding the 2000 presidential election.
ACORN says it's required by law to turn in all its applications and flag the few with problems. But good intentions don't excuse what's at best a sloppy operation -- especially because the group's employees have been caught in prior elections submitting bogus registrations. Its practice of paying employees bonuses to sign up new voters invites phony applications. States should bar that practice, if ACORN won't.
ACORN aims its registration drives at lower-income voters, who tend to vote Democratic. The group's most vocal critics are, naturally, Republicans. ACORN and its supporters contend its opponents are trying to distract attention from efforts, often pushed by Republicans, to suppress voting. Investigators need to be on guard against both.
Meanwhile, the controversy over ACORN may be priming the pump for another legal battle royal if the election is close. Anyone up for a rerun of Florida 2000? We didn't think so.

Liberal Watchdog Group: Pelosi, Investigate Mahoney Now!
Photo--Florida GOP Chairman Jim Greer calls on Mahoney to resign.
.png)
A DC watchdog group -- often accused of being left-leaning -- has sent a letter to the House Ethics Committee asking for an investigation into revelations about Rep. Tim Mahoney.
Though the Palm Beach area Democrat has asked for his own inquiry, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington says its goal is to ensure that the committee "consider specific relevant provisions of House rules."
CREW says Mahoney's conduct -- paying off an ex-mistress, "implicates numerous House rules," including a clause that "requires congressional employees to perform public duties commensurate with their compensation. Thus, hiring a staff member to facilitate a sexual relationship is impermissible."
It also suggests that "by conducting a sexual relationship with an employee he supervised, and by firing that employee after the affair ended, Rep. Mahoney may have engaged in sexual harassment in violation of House Rule 23.."
It also suggests he may have violated campaign finance laws by "failing to report his in-kind contribution to the campaign to pay Ms. Allen."

Free Trade Creates Florida Jobs, But Obama Opposes It
Watch John McCain and Barack Obama talk about Free Trade during the presidential debate. Barack Obama reminded us tonight that he does not support free trade, even though it is critical to Florida's economy and our status as the "Hub of the Americas."
Reviews Are In--John McCain Wins the Last Debate

John McCain won tonight's debate by vowing to fight for "Joe the Plumber" everyday he is President.
John McCain was a spokesperson for millions of Americans who do not want their taxes raised and their health care socialized.
John McCain won with strong, clear straight talk about setting a new direction for our country and fighting for working families.
On issue after issue, Barack Obama showed that his words do not match his record. Whether it was his tax plan, his spending plans or his record, Barack Obama was full of half-truths.
John McCain outlined his specific, bold plan for creating jobs, helping those near retirement, keeping people in their homes, curbing spending by a hatchet and scalpel, lowering health care costs and achieving energy independence.

5 Questions for Mahoney

The National Republican Congressional Committee released a statement today after Tim Mahoney (D-FL) refused to answer questions at his press conference responding to news reports that he paid a former employee $121,000 in hush money.
“Congressman Tim Mahoney’s cover-up and stonewalling three weeks from Election Day is nothing more than an attempt to run out the clock without being accountable to voters in his district. While today’s press conference must have been very difficult for Mr. Mahoney, his statement was incomplete and insufficient. The voters in the 16th Congressional District have been let down one too many times by both parties, and they deserve an open and swift account from Mr. Mahoney.
...
Based on news reports, the Democrat Leadership had at least some knowledge of Congressman Mahoney’s inappropriate and potentially illegal behavior, which begs the question: What did the Democrat Leadership know and when did they know it?
Five questions Tim Mahoney should answer today:
Did Tim Mahoney pay his former employee $121,000?
Did the money originate from his campaign account? If not, from where?
Is Ms. Allen telling the truth when she said Tim Mahoney arranged to get her a job with his media firm?
Why did Tim Mahoney find it necessary to move Ms. Allen off the government payroll and pay her from his campaign account once rumors of their affair surfaced?
How long has the Democrat Leadership known Mahoney paid off his mistress and what did they advise Mahoney to do when they learned of it?

Local Voter Fraud Claims Rise
From Tampa Tribune
When DeeAnn Athan received a new voter registration card at her downtown law office a few weeks ago, she figured it must be a mistake.
The card had her age and middle initial wrong and a different Social Security and driver’s license number. The only things correct were her gender and party affiliation.
After making a few calls, Athan discovered she had two voter registrations on the books at the Hillsborough County elections office. One had her place of residence listed as her West Shore Boulevard home; the other her Kennedy Boulevard office. …
Hillsborough County Elections Supervisor Buddy Johnson said the discrepancy is likely a case of voter registration fraud by a third party group that pays people to register voters. …
Hillsborough elections officials have come across numerous other questionable voter registration applications in the run-up to the Nov. 4 general election, which has seen hundreds of thousands of new voters added to election rolls across the state. …
With the general election only weeks away, scores of fraudulent voter registrations are being investigated across the country, most of them submitted by third party groups.
One group, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, which has registered some 1.3 million voters nationwide, is facing allegations of fraud from elections officials in Wisconsin, North Carolina, New Mexico, Michigan, Ohio and Missouri. …

More on the Democrats' Bogus Press Conference
Today Congressman Lincoln Diaz-Balart’s campaign issued the following fact sheet in response to Raul Martinez’s frivolous accusations yesterday – a pathetic act of desperation as voters consistently reject his record of corruption.
THE FACTS
• In trying to rescue Raul Martinez’s sinking campaign, the Florida Democratic Party held a bogus press conference yesterday making baseless implications about Congressman Diaz-Balart. The political hack that made the statement refused to take any questions from the members of media that were present.
• The Miami Herald has already reported that the allegations are uncorroborated (October 9th, page 2A).
• Nowhere in the audio and video presented by the Democratic Party does Puerto Rican Senator Jorge de Castro Font mention a suitcase or $50,000 as maliciously suggested by operatives.
• The Fonalledas Family mentioned by Senator Jorge de Castro Font has contributed a total of $400 to Congressman Diaz-Balart’s campaign.
• Unlike his opponent, Congressman Diaz-Balart does not have a history of corruption and unethical behavior. He has always served with integrity and respect.
• Unlike his opponent Congressman Diaz-Balart has never used public office for personal financial enrichment. A simple review of Raul Martinez’s personal financial disclosure forms indicates that he has become extremely wealthy through public office.
• Unlike his opponent Congressman Diaz-Balart has never illegally lobbied other public officials as Raul Martinez recently did in the City of Miami to benefit one of his companies (The Miami Herald, September 11, 2008).
• The circus and distractions that others have attempted to create in order to deflect attention from Raul Martinez’s history of corruption and disgraceful behavior will not influence the outcome of this election.

Is ACORN Stealing The Election?
From Investor's Business Daily
It's a legitimate question to raise now that the FBI has raided the offices of the nonprofit Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now in Nevada and North Carolina, two states where Obama and John McCain are running neck-and-neck. ACORN has registered bogus voters in both states.
The group's voter-registration fraud is rampant, and authorities plan a nationwide sweep of ACORN offices to collect records.
In Nevada, state officials say the fraudulent registrations included forms for the starting lineup of the Dallas Cowboys football team, including quarterback Tony Romo.
"Romo is not registered to vote in the state of Nevada," Secretary of State Ross Miller said, "and anybody trying to pose as Terrell Owens won't be able to cast a ballot on Nov. 4."

Greer to Thurman: Help Ensure Election Integrity
In a letter delivered this morning, RPOF Chairman Jim Greer asks FDP Chairman Karen Thurman to help ensure that every legal, legitimate vote counts in the upcoming election and expresses concern that Democrat poll watchers may attempt to inappropriately "assist" Florida voters. The text of the letter is as follows:
Dear Chairman Thurman:
As the election approaches, I want to personally request the opportunity to work with you to ensure that Florida’s voters are given the opportunity to cast their ballots free of any harassment or intimidation and to make sure that every legal, legitimate vote counts.
As you may recall, in 2004 a circuit judge in Seminole County entered an injunction against the Florida Democrat Party and the Democrat National Committee enjoining them from harassing Republican poll watchers. This order was prompted by threatening letters and phone calls to Florida residents who had registered to serve as poll watchers on Election Day. This injunction is still in effect.
I have recently read reports that Florida Democrat lawyers intend to serve as poll watchers in order to “assist” voters at the polls during the general election. I am concerned about these reports, given Florida law regarding poll watcher conduct. In particular, it should be noted that Florida law regarding poll watchers strictly prohibits poll watchers from “interact[ing] with voters.” Fl. Stat. § 101.131. Thus, it would be inappropriate for your poll watchers to provide “assistance” to voters at the polls.
As Circuit Judge Nancy F. Alley warned in 2004, “The election process should be allowed to proceed without any interference, intimidation, or other threats that may have a chilling effect on the free exercise of voters to cast their legal ballots.”
I would welcome the opportunity to meet with you, either privately or publically, to discuss ways that we can help ensure that Florida’s Supervisors of Elections and their staffs uphold Florida’s election laws to protect Florida voters.
Sincerely,
James A. Greer
Chairman

ICYMI: FL GOP on the Warpath
Ortiz complaint dismissed; GOP goes on the warpath
Florida House lawyers have dismissed a complaint filed against Republican Senate candidate Belinda Ortiz by a Rollins College student, deciding there was no evidence she had improperly lobbied lawmakers.
The complaint was filed Monday by John Watson, a college student who has been active with the college's Young Democrat club, who alleged she had lobbied without registering with the state based on her biography on the campaign Web site. Ortiz is running against Democratic Orlando Sen. Gary Siplin, whose campaign refused to comment on the complaint.
After the Sentinel reported the complaint, Florida Democrats put out a statement Tuesday that read "It's a shame to see that the Culture of Corruption remains alive and well with Belinda Ortiz and the Republican Party."
But a day after the ink dried, House Rules Chairman David Rivera, R-Miami, dismissed the complaint Tuesday afternoon, writing to Watson that it was "based entirely on a political camapign web page, not on your personal knowledge."
Immediately, the state Republican Party went on the warpath accusing the Siplin campaign of "taking advantage of a college student."
“Gary Siplin is the last person who should be hurling ethics accusations against someone else,” said RPOF spokeswoman Erin VanSickle in a statement. “While Belinda Ortiz is clearly innocent of these misleading complaints, Gary Siplin is far from being vindicated of his charges—including a felony conviction.”
“Gary Siplin and the Florida Democrats should explain to Florida taxpayers why they are spending time fabricating complaints against others instead of working to pay back the money he owes Floridians,” she continued. “A convicted felon who refuses to pay child support simply cannot use the words ‘ethics’ and ‘culture of corruption’ and expect people to take him seriously, and both he and Karen Thurman should be ashamed of themselves.”
In an e-mail to the Sentinel, Watson said he was a registered Republican and had filed the complaint because "I believe in good government."
But Rollins College Democrats President Jonathan "Yoni" Binstock said Tuesday that Watson is a member of the group. Binstock said the group has not been involved in local races, and is focused on the presidential contest. Binstock said his group also did not sanction Watson's effort to file a complaint against Ortiz.

Roll Call Weighs in on Jennings Poll
Jennings’ Poll in Florida’s 13th District Neglects Reality (Excerpts)
By Nathan L. Gonzales
Roll Call Contributing Writer
A new poll released by Florida Democrat Christine Jennings is a great example of why it’s important to not accept polling numbers and memos at face value.
...
On Friday, the Jennings campaign released a poll showing her down by just 4 points in her 2008 rematch with Buchanan. According to the Sept. 22-23 Feldman Group poll, the GOP Congressman held a narrow 44 percent to 40 percent advantage in the head-to-head matchup, with 16 percent undecided.
The problem is that there are four candidates on the November ballot, not two, including 2002 and 2004 13th district Democratic nominee Jan Schneider, who is running as an Independent. The one-page polling memo makes no mention of Schneider or any third-party candidates, but asserts, “This contest has become too close to call with atmospherics that favor Jennings.”
Buchanan is vulnerable, but this polling memo and two-way ballot ignore the reality of the electoral situation and is a misleading attempt by the campaign to generate buzz around the race.
Schneider is not a fringe candidate. In 2002, she ran unsuccessfully against Katherine Harris (R), losing 55 percent to 45 percent, despite being heavily outspent.
Two years later, Schneider defeated Jennings, 47 percent to 38 percent, in the multicandidate Democratic primary and lost to Harris again, 55 percent to 45 percent, in the general election. In that race, Schneider was named one of the “Kos Dozen,” a list of candidates promoted by DailyKos.com, a liberal Web site.
Last cycle, Jennings defeated Schneider 62 percent to 38 percent for the Democratic nomination but lost the general election to Buchanan. Schneider was angry at the Democratic Party for backing Jennings in 2004 (and since), even though she came so close to upsetting Harris in 2002 without any party help. That’s largely why Schneider continues to run in the district.
...
When asked about Schneider’s performance in the Feldman poll, Jennings Communications Director Melissa Smith responded, “We are releasing the information in the memo. We believe the voters of the 13th district want to replace Vern Buchanan, and that they will vote for Christine Jennings.” The omitted information screamed louder than the numbers themselves.
An Aug. 23-24 Public Opinion Strategies poll for the National Republican Congressional Committee showed Buchanan leading Jennings 48 percent to 30 percent, with Schneider drawing 6 percent of the vote.
Even though Jennings came close last cycle, she will need every Democratic vote possible in a district President Bush carried by 13 points in 2004.
...
In refusing to release a true ballot test reflective of the November ballot, Jennings leads observers to the obvious conclusion that she is hiding something — and to the view that Schneider’s candidacy is fatal to Jennings’ electoral chances.

New Democrat Poll Shows Buchanan with Double-Digit Lead, Jennings at Shockingly Low 31%, without Jan Schneider in the Poll
Tallahassee–A fresh poll released today by the liberal Daily Kos gives Rep. Vern Buchanan a 12-point lead over challenger Christine Jennings, disputing Jennings’ own bogus poll results and showing the Democrat trailing badly among key groups like independents and seniors. The poll showed Buchanan winning 43-31 percent.
The survey was conducted Sept. 23, 24 and 25 by Research 2000 of Rockville, MD, according to the Daily Kos website. Daily Kos runs a national left-wing website dedicated to electing Democrat candidates, but the poll the site released Sunday contradicted Jennings' bogus survey that she released to the press claiming she only trailed by four points. Neither the Jennings’ poll nor the Daily Kos poll included Jan Schneider, a former Democrat who will be on the ballot in November as an unaffiliated candidate.
The Daily Kos poll said Jennings was viewed unfavorably by voters in the 13th District by a margin of 38-32 percent. Additionally, the Daily Kos survey said Buchanan was winning the age 60 and over vote by a whopping 18 points, 46 to 28 percent. Seniors are considered the most reliable voters in an election. Additionally, the poll showed Buchanan was winning the independent vote 40-30 percent.
"Obviously Jennings conducted a phony push poll designed to produce a false result," said RPOF Communications Director Erin VanSickle. “Even the liberal Daily Kos disputes Jennings numbers."

McCain-Palin Campaign Statement on Today's Vote
“From the minute John McCain suspended his campaign and arrived in Washington to address this crisis, he was attacked by the Democratic leadership: Senators Obama and Reid, Speaker Pelosi and others. Their partisan attacks were an effort to gain political advantage during a national economic crisis. By doing so, they put at risk the homes, livelihoods and savings of millions of American families.
“Barack Obama failed to lead, phoned it in, attacked John McCain, and refused to even say if he supported the final bill.
“Just before the vote, when the outcome was still in doubt, Speaker Pelosi gave a strongly worded partisan speech and poisoned the outcome.
“This bill failed because Barack Obama and the Democrats put politics ahead of country.” --McCain-Palin senior policy adviser Doug Holtz-Eakin
Before McCain Came To Washington, Senate Democrats Called On McCain For Leadership In Economic Crisis
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV): "We Need The Republican Nominee For President To Let Us Know Where He Stands And What We Should Do." Reid: "We need, now, the Republicans to start producing some votes for us. We need the Republican nominee for president to let us know where he stands and what we should do." (Sen. Harry Reid, Press Conference, Washington, D.C., 9/23/08)
