Turnpike Shirts Still Talk of the Town

On the first day of the Republican National Convention, Florida's delegates were decked out in turnpike shirts, quickly becoming a favorite of TV cameras and bloggers. The shirts have now become one of the hottest collectors' items from the 2008 Convention. (a little birdie told us a CNN producer loved the shirts so much, she requested one to wear home to D.C.)

Check out new photos of the decked-out delegates at www.rpof.org; we even made it onto the Tollroads News!

Greer is St. Pete Times "Winner of the Week"

State GOP Chairman Jim Greer managed to maneuver through national party leaders trying to block Florida Republicans from having a full delegation at the convention and a hurricane washing out the first night of the national convention and still have lots of delegates praising the way he organized Florida's role in the convention. He also generated some national Buzz about him being a contender for chairman of Republican National Committee. November results are what matter most, of course, and we'll be interested if anyone steps up to challenge him for re-election in Jan.

McCain Speech Tops in Ratings

According to Bloomberg News, Republican presidential candidate John McCain attracted a record 38.9 million television viewers to his acceptance speech last night, surpassing Democratic rival Barack Obama and McCain's running mate, Sarah Palin.

The total exceeded the 38.4 million who watched Obama accept the Democratic nomination in Denver on Aug. 28, Nielsen Media Research said today in a statement. Palin drew 37.2 million on Sept. 3 after three days of intense media coverage.

Florida Women Take Over Convention Floor

By BOB DART
Palm Beach Post-Cox News Service
ST. PAUL, MINN. — On a night for the political history books, Florida claimed a footnote of its own as Republican women filled the state's floor seats Wednesday to greet Sarah Palin, their party's first female vice presidential nominee.

"Not a token woman - a real woman," said Sharon Day, a delegate from Fort Lauderdale.

By acclamation, the delegation decided that its male members would give up their seats - and prime TV positions - so that female delegates, alternates, staffers and guests could join the Alaska governor in the milestone for their gender and party.

Convention fundraises for hurricane relief

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Republicans are trying to steer clear of frivolity at their party's national convention, converting parties and rallies into fundraising drives for victims of Hurricane Gustav.

...Political conventions typically aim to recharge the batteries of the party faithful, usually through glitzy galas. But Gustav has led Republican leaders to replace some revelry with outpourings of compassion - and money - for hurricane victims.

...On Monday morning, the Florida delegation canceled a pool party scheduled for Thursday and began soliciting donations for the American Red Cross and another unnamed charity to aid Florida victims of last month's Tropical Storm Fay.

"This is not our finest hour, this is our most appropriate hour," said state Republican chairman Jim Greer, who set a $10,000 goal for the delegation...

Floridians Focus on Storm

By BOB DART

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Instead of a political rally, the Florida delegation will open its convention with a multi-faith prayer breakfast on Monday morning as Hurricane Gustav prompted Republicans to temper their celebration of the presidential nomination.

"When a storm like this hits, we're not Republicans or Democrats, we're all Americans," Lt. Gov. Jeff Kottkamp told the Florida delegates at a hastily called assembly Sunday evening. "When we get through this storm, then it will be time to focus on this election."

After Jim Greer, chairman of the Republican Party of Florida, announced party cancellations and called for charitable donations, delegates from South Florida concurred with the restraint and cutbacks. Arizona Sen. John McCain had earlier called for the scaled-down convention that will nominate him for president.

...Greer announced that the funds that would have been spent on an elaborate, concluding pool party on Thursday night will be donated to charities for storm victims and that delegates will be asked to bring donations to another gathering on Tuesday night.

5 Things You Didn't Know About Sarah Palin

(Courtesy Mike Allen’s Politico Playbook)

1. Her youngest son has Down syndrome. When Palin announced to friends after 4-month-old Trig's birth in April that he had been diagnosed with Down syndrome, she wrote them a private e-mail she shares with People: 'This new person in your life can help everyone put things in perspective and bind us together, and get everyone focused on what really matters ... Those who love him will think less about self and focus less on what the world tells [us] is 'normal' or 'perfect.' '

2. She has a son serving in the Army. Palin's son Track, 19, is expected to be deployed to Iraq this fall. 'He's looking forward to it and we're proud of him,' Palin's husband, Todd, tells PEOPLE. 'He's grown up a lot in the past year.' Says Palin: 'I'm proud of him but I worry.'

3. Her husband Todd is part Eskimo. Together 20 years, Todd, also 44, and Sarah 'always wanted enough [kids] for a basketball team,' she says. Todd is part Yupik Eskimo and helps run a family commercial fishing operation in addition to a fulltime job as an oil company production operator. As a hobby, he races snowmobiles. He caught Sarah's eye in high school and they married in 1988. 'He was the best basketball player I'd ever seen,' she says.

4. She's a former beauty queen. The 1987 University of Idaho graduate tells PEOPLE: 'I did the beauty pageants to earn money for college.' Adding in a Vogue interview, 'They made us line up in bathing suits and turn our backs so the male judges could look at our butts. I couldn't believe it.' The former Miss Wasilla, however, prefers basketball and hunting and fishing to bathing suit and evening gown contests. 'I love the outdoors,' she tells People.

5. She has a great sense of style. Palin may be comfortable in a fisherman's vest or hunting fatigues, but on the job as governor she wears Kazuo Kawasaki designer glasses and black Franco Sarto boots!

What Chris Van Hollen Doesn’t Want You to Know

As mayor of Hialeah, Raul Martinez was indicted on eight counts of racketeering and seven counts of extortion.

When it was revealed that Jennings did not pay her taxes, instead of stepping up and accepting responsibility like a real leader, she forced a staff member to take the heat. If Jennings can’t even run her own campaign without embarrassing mistakes, how can she manage a Congressional office? (“Jennings pays IRS, could pay again in election,” Jeremy Wallace, Herald Tribune)

Joe Garcia has campaigned with and accepted money from corrupt Manhattan Congressman Charlie Rangel, who was recently caught in two separate scandals: a sweetheart deal for his four rent-controlled New York City apartments and using his position in Congress to raise money for a building bearing his own name.
