Pick of Palin energizes area GOP efforts
From the St. Petersburg Times:
It's Friday afternoon, and the Hillsborough County Republican Party headquarters is buzzing.
While Ann Carder sits at a small desk phoning to drum up support for Republican presidential nominee John McCain, Rodney Akers assembles yard signs and Suzy Davis collects donations from people who stop by the Brandon office.
Barbara Graham walks in and requests two bumper stickers.
"Make sure they say Palin on them," she says.
Republicans from Pinellas County to Pensacola say McCain's choice of the gun-shooting-hockey-mom governor of Alaska as his running mate has ramped up Floridians' interest in the GOP ticket dramatically.

Florida may be falling from Obama's grasp
From the St. Pete Times:
Barack Obama could be on the verge of falling out of contention in Florida.
...
But for all the attention to Florida from the Obama campaign, there's little tangible evidence it's paying off.
He is farther behind in the state than John Kerry was at this point in 2004, even though McCain began buying Florida TV ads only last week. By this time in 2004, the Bush-Cheney campaign had spent $13-million on Florida TV. In the rolling average of Florida polls compiled by the Web site RealClearPolitics.com, Obama has never taken the lead over McCain in Florida, and the latest average shows him behind by 5 percentage points. They were tied in early August.
Four Florida polls came out this week, with one showing a tied race, the others showing McCain leading by 5 to 8 percentage points.

Govenor Crist on Florida’s Fuel Supply and Gas Prices
“Currently Florida is watching Hurricane Ike approach the Gulf shores of Texas. The people of Texas are in our prayers, and we stand ready to help them in the recovery efforts following the storm. Last evening, I reached out to Governor Perry to let him know that Floridians are prepared to assist our neighbors in their time of need.
“It is important for the people of Florida to know that our state currently has an adequate fuel supply. Major fuel companies continue to deliver millions of gallons of gasoline and diesel to retailers and communities across the state. In addition, we are coordinating with the petroleum industry and representatives from the Florida Petroleum Council and Florida Petroleum Marketers and Convenience Store Association to ensure that there is fuel to meet current consumer needs.
“Despite this fact, there are confirmed reports of gas stations charging more than five dollars a gallon, which can only be described as unconscionable. Raising rates to exorbitant levels like this only causes unnecessary panic and fear. This type of behavior will not be tolerated, and I pledge to work with Attorney General McCollum and Agriculture Commissioner Bronson to ensure swift and appropriate action is taken against all price gougers.
“To report suspected cases of price gouging, please call 1-800-HELP-FLA or 1-866-966-7226.”

Turnpike Shirts Still Talk of the Town
On the first day of the Republican National Convention, Florida's delegates were decked out in turnpike shirts, quickly becoming a favorite of TV cameras and bloggers. The shirts have now become one of the hottest collectors' items from the 2008 Convention. (a little birdie told us a CNN producer loved the shirts so much, she requested one to wear home to D.C.)
Check out new photos of the decked-out delegates at www.rpof.org; we even made it onto the Tollroads News!

Obama on Palin: 'Mother, governor, moose shooter'
Politico.com reports from Farmington Hills, MI:
Obama told the crowd that McCain and Palin spent most of the convention talking about their biographies.
Palin's bio is "compelling," Obama said.
The crowd booed. "No, it's an interesting story." More boos. "No, no, it is. I mean that sincerely. Mother, governor, moose shooter."
The crowd broke out in laughter. "That's cool. That's cool. That's cool stuff," Obama said.
We say...Sportsmen and -women and Second Amendment Rights supporters in Florida don't think your remarks are cool at all, Senator Obama.
