State GOP Chairman Jim Greer managed to maneuver through national party leaders trying to block Florida Republicans from having a full delegation at the convention and a hurricane washing out the first night of the national convention and still have lots of delegates praising the way he organized Florida's role in the convention. He also generated some national Buzz about him being a contender for chairman of Republican National Committee. November results are what matter most, of course, and we'll be interested if anyone steps up to challenge him for re-election in Jan.

The total exceeded the 38.4 million who watched Obama accept the Democratic nomination in Denver on Aug. 28, Nielsen Media Research said today in a statement. Palin drew 37.2 million on Sept. 3 after three days of intense media coverage.

Florida Women Take Over Convention Floor
By BOB DART
Palm Beach Post-Cox News Service
ST. PAUL, MINN. — On a night for the political history books, Florida claimed a footnote of its own as Republican women filled the state's floor seats Wednesday to greet Sarah Palin, their party's first female vice presidential nominee.
"Not a token woman - a real woman," said Sharon Day, a delegate from Fort Lauderdale.
Presidential race
By acclamation, the delegation decided that its male members would give up their seats - and prime TV positions - so that female delegates, alternates, staffers and guests could join the Alaska governor in the milestone for their gender and party.

Convention fundraises for hurricane relief
ST. PAUL, Minn. - Republicans are trying to steer clear of frivolity at their party's national convention, converting parties and rallies into fundraising drives for victims of Hurricane Gustav.
...Political conventions typically aim to recharge the batteries of the party faithful, usually through glitzy galas. But Gustav has led Republican leaders to replace some revelry with outpourings of compassion - and money - for hurricane victims.
...On Monday morning, the Florida delegation canceled a pool party scheduled for Thursday and began soliciting donations for the American Red Cross and another unnamed charity to aid Florida victims of last month's Tropical Storm Fay.
"This is not our finest hour, this is our most appropriate hour," said state Republican chairman Jim Greer, who set a $10,000 goal for the delegation...

Floridians Focus on Storm
By BOB DART
ST. PAUL, Minn. — Instead of a political rally, the Florida delegation will open its convention with a multi-faith prayer breakfast on Monday morning as Hurricane Gustav prompted Republicans to temper their celebration of the presidential nomination.
"When a storm like this hits, we're not Republicans or Democrats, we're all Americans," Lt. Gov. Jeff Kottkamp told the Florida delegates at a hastily called assembly Sunday evening. "When we get through this storm, then it will be time to focus on this election."
After Jim Greer, chairman of the Republican Party of Florida, announced party cancellations and called for charitable donations, delegates from South Florida concurred with the restraint and cutbacks. Arizona Sen. John McCain had earlier called for the scaled-down convention that will nominate him for president.
...Greer announced that the funds that would have been spent on an elaborate, concluding pool party on Thursday night will be donated to charities for storm victims and that delegates will be asked to bring donations to another gathering on Tuesday night.
