RNC RELEASES NEW WEB VIDEO “LISTEN TO ME”

The Republican National Committee announced a new web video today on the Democrats’ failure to listen to the American public’s concerns over health care reform.

“As President Obama, Harry Reid, and their liberal allies negotiate their government-run health care experiment behind the closed doors of the Capitol building, a majority of Americans from across the country are making it known that they oppose the Democrats’ liberal plans and favor a common-sense incremental approach to health care reform. Unfortunately, it is becoming clear that the president and Harry Reid simply aren’t interested in what Americans want. I encourage President Obama and Congressional Democrats to stop working in secret, start listening, and join with Republicans on health care reform that the American people actually want and deserve.” – RNC Chairman Michael Steele

Governor Crist Signs Bill Expanding Passenger Rail, Creating Jobs

TALLAHASSEE – Governor Charlie Crist today signed House Bill 1B, historic legislation passed during the recent special session. The bill establishes a comprehensive framework for Florida’s current and future passenger rail system, which today includes SunRail, Tri-Rail and plans for high speed rail. The Governor congratulated Senate President Jeff Atwater and House Speaker Larry Cretul, along with the entire Florida Legislature, for recognizing the importance of the jobs and economic development that will result from passenger rail throughout the Sunshine State.

“Future generations of Floridians will look on this day as a bold step toward modernizing how residents and visitors will travel in our state,” Governor Crist said. “Individuals and businesses from North Florida to South Florida will benefit from the economic and job opportunities that will arise along each of the rail corridors. Together, we move the Sunshine State into a new era of collaboration and innovation.”

Governor Crist signed the bill in Tallahassee alongside Mark Wilson, president and CEO of the Florida Chamber of Commerce, and Agency for Workforce Innovation Director Cynthia R. Lorenzo. Also joining Governor Crist for the bill signing ceremony were Bobby Jernigan, executive director of the Florida Commission for the Transportation Disadvantaged, and Sally Benjamin of the Florida Council of the Blind.

Later today, Governor Crist will highlight the job-creation and economic-development opportunities of the legislation during visits to Tampa, Orlando and Fort Lauderdale, three communities that will directly benefit from the passenger rail projects. The Governor will congratulate Senator Mike Fasano, Representative Kevin Ambler, former Senator Daniel Webster and Senator Jeremy Ring for their work to enhance passenger rail transportation in the Sunshine State. Lt. Governor Jeff Kottkamp will attend the bill signing ceremonies in Tampa and Orlando.

"As elected leaders we have a responsibility to create an environment in which Florida's families, communities, and businesses can be successful," said Florida Senate President Jeff Atwater. "Today, Florida is embracing the opportunity to lead the nation in developing a comprehensive transportation system, thereby ensuring our competitive edge in the 21st Century global economy. A comprehensive transportation system, creating opportunities and avenues to connect employers and employees, is integral to building a stronger future for Florida."

The primary components of House Bill 1B include the following:

• SunRail – The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is working with the federal government and Central Florida officials to develop and operate SunRail, a commuter rail transit project that will run along a 61-mile stretch of existing rail freight tracks in Orange, Seminole, Volusia and Osceola counties. The legislation authorizes FDOT to complete the purchase of the Central Florida Rail Corridor once the Federal Transit Administration has established a full-funding grant agreement.

• Tri-Rail – The legislation also provides additional funding for Tri-Rail, which currently operates 50 trains daily from Palm Beach County to Miami-Dade County. The operator of the passenger line, South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (SFRTA), announced in April 2009 that it was in danger of significant service reductions without additional resources.

• Florida Statewide Rail Commission and Florida Rail Enterprise – The legislation creates the Florida Statewide Rail Commission to advise the FDOT and the Legislature on the development and operation of Florida’s passenger rail systems. In addition, it creates the Florida Rail Enterprise within FDOT to oversee all state-owned passenger rail systems. The legislation addresses liability risks associated with state-owned passenger rail corridors and requires FDOT to work with communities affected by increased freight rail traffic resulting from routing modifications.

“I appreciate the hard work, discipline, and focus demonstrated by the House and Senate, and the Governor’s Office, in approving this important bill,” said House Speaker Larry Cretul. “We have opened the door to a new and improved transportation future in Florida, one in which citizens and visitors will find travel easier and more efficient, and we did so with no new taxes. It’s a win/win for all parties.”

Governor Crist praised legislators for solidifying Florida’s commitment to expanding passenger rail service throughout the state and laying the groundwork for the Tampa-Orlando-Miami High Speed Rail Program. Florida has applied to receive $2.6 billion in federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 funds for the Tampa-Orlando segment. Once the high speed rail segment is developed, the Tampa Bay Area Regional Transportation Authority plans to develop commuter rail connections throughout the Tampa Bay region.

Last week, Governor Crist wrote to Secretary Ray LaHood of the United States Department of Transportation, asking him to approve Florida’s application to develop high speed rail. Governor Crist reminded Secretary LaHood that approval of Florida’s application in 2009 will ensure initiation of the Tampa-Orlando segment in 2010.

RNC Releases New Web Video “Listen” On Democrats’ Health Care Reform Failures

WASHINGTON – The Republican National Committee announced a new web video today on President Obama’s and Congressional Democrats’ failure to listen to the American public’s health care reform concerns. The web video, entitled “Listen,” can be viewed here.

“For months Americans all across the country have been letting President Obama and Congressional Democrats know that their government-run health care experiment is wrong for America. The American people don’t want Washington Democrats spending another trillion dollars that we don’t have on a liberal health care bill that will raise taxes, increase premiums, cut Medicare, and drive us further into debt. But Democrats aren’t getting the message because they simply aren’t listening. We have seldom seen a political party march in lock step in opposition to the will of the American people. Democrats believe that they can do anything, say anything, and spend any amount. They believe they can trample over the system of checks and balances that have protected this country from radical extremes for over 200 years. President Obama and Congressional Democrats need to slow down and start listening to the American people and work with Republicans to find common-sense solutions for health care.” – RNC Chairman Michael Steele

Governor Crist Celebrates New Mike Fasano Regional Hurricane Shelter

HUDSON – Governor Charlie Crist today participated in the ribbon-cutting ceremony to commemorate the opening of the new Mike Fasano Regional Hurricane Shelter. The Governor joined Senator Mike Fasano, Representatives Will Weatherford and John Legg, Pasco County commissioners, and state and local emergency management officials for the ceremony.

“This new shelter facility will greatly enhance the capabilities of the county during disasters and other times of need, as well as continue to foster a culture of preparedness which is so important here in Florida,” said Governor Crist. “It is fitting that this regional shelter is named after Senator Mike Fasano, a great Floridian who exemplifies public service and has an unwavering commitment to the people of Florida.”

"I am both thrilled and honored to be a part of this state of the art facility. It gives me great peace of mind to know that in case of a hurricane, the residents of West Pasco will have a world class shelter to keep them safe throughout the storm," said Senator Mike Fasano.

The new 37,263 square foot facility is designed and constructed to meet the new International Code Council storm shelter standards. It can withstand hurricane wind gusts up to 190 miles per hour and has the capacity to house an estimated 1,000 persons for a minimum of 72 hours of self-sustained continuous operation. Additionally, this facility is scheduled to house a county health department clinic and a premier health clinic, a county effort to increase access to health care.

David Halstead, interim deputy director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management, added, “This shelter and clinic is a testament to the coordinated efforts of state, local and federal entities to ensure that residents are served and protected during a disaster.”

The project was made possible by a $6.3 million grant provided by the State of Florida. In addition, $979,722 in Federal Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) funds were used to complete the facility for a total state-federal investment of $7,368,451. The Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) is a federally-funded program, administered by the State of Florida to help prevent future losses of life and property damage due to disasters. HMGP projects strengthen public facilities and equipment, schools, roadways, public utility systems, water control facilities and recreational areas in communities throughout Florida.

The Governor emphasized the importance of disaster preparedness year round. State emergency managers advise that the current El Niño pattern may trigger severe weather in Florida this winter and upcoming spring. The Governor noted that deadly tornado outbreaks struck during the overnight and early morning hours during El Niño events in 1982-83, 1997-98, and 2006-07. He recalled the tornadoes that struck Lake County in 2007 and killed 21 people, making it the deadliest tornado outbreak in the United States that year and the second deadliest in Florida’s history.

Republicans Pick Up Mayoral Seat In Lakeland

~Florida Republicans praise Assembly of Black Republicans and African American Republican Leadership Council for hard work in the Lakeland election ~

Tallahassee–Representative Jennifer Carroll (R-Fleming Island), Chairman of the African American Republican Leadership Council (AARLC), and Republican Party of Florida Chairman Jim Greer today congratulated Gow Field on his election to serve as mayor of Lakeland and Phillip Walker, a member of the AARLC, on his election to the Lakeland City Commission.

“I am proud to congratulate Mayor-elect Field and Commissioner-elect Walker on their outstanding victories,” said Representative Carroll. “Across the country, the results of November’s election demonstrated that Independent and Democrat voters are dissatisfied with the Democrat-style of leadership and willing to look to the Republican side of the aisle for leaders who better reflect their values. As a result of yesterday’s run-off election, we now have additional African American Republican leaders in Lakeland who will work hard to reflect Republican values in their public service.”

“I commend the Florida Assembly of Black Republicans and the African American Republican Leadership Council for their valiant grassroots effort in these races,” continued Representative Carroll.

“The Assembly of Black Republicans and the African American Republican Leadership Council put out a tremendous effort during this election, and we look forward to partnering with these outstanding organizations as we work to build a diverse party that includes Republicans from across the state without consideration of ethnic and cultural barriers,” said RPOF Chairman Jim Greer.

Florida Senators Honor FSU Football Coach

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators George LeMieux (R-FL) and Bill Nelson (D-FL) yesterday introduced a resolution honoring and commending Florida State University (FSU) Coach Bobby Bowden for his successful career. Coach Bowden has led the Seminoles football team for the past 34 years.

“For the past 34 years, Bobby Bowden has been a Tallahassee institution, helping young athletes grow to succeed in both football and in life,” LeMieux said. “As his legendary career comes to a close, Floridians can take inspiration from his leadership as one of the most successful college football coaches of all time. His wisdom, loyalty, and warmth have touched the lives of many throughout the years and will continue to serve as an example to all Floridians.”

“Bobby Bowden put FSU on the map,” said U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson. “Because of his accomplishments most everybody in America has heard of Florida State.”

Over his 44-year career, Bowden coached at Howard College, now Samford University, West Virginia University, and Florida State University. His 388 coaching victories are the second highest in college football history. Coach Bowden led FSU to 2 national championships in 1993 and 1999, and to a bowl game every year since 1982.

Statement by Governor Charlie Crist Regarding the Legislature’s Rail Transit Progress

“I am grateful to House sponsor Representative Gary Aubuchon, Chairman Dave Murzin and the House Economic Development & Community Affairs Policy Council for recognizing the importance of SunRail to Florida’s residents, visitors and businesses. The Council’s unanimous approval today demonstrates a common-sense approach to job creation and economic development that will benefit our state for decades. This is a positive first step, and I look forward to continued legislative support for transforming Florida’s transportation future.

“I also want to congratulate Chairman Andy Gardiner for conducting an excellent workshop in the Florida Senate today. The thoughtful and thorough discussion will certainly further our understanding and appreciation of what the Sunshine State will gain from additional passenger rail.”

Lt. Governor Meets with Brevard County Business and Industry Leaders

SATELLITE BEACH – Today, Lt. Governor Jeff Kottkamp met with a group of Brevard County’s innovators and industry leaders at Satellite Beach’s Lighting Science Group Corporation headquarters to discuss emerging technologies and tour their facility.

During a luncheon meeting with area businesses, the Lt. Governor stated, “The space industry is critical to Florida’s economy and benefits the well-being of all the people of Florida. It is clear that innovation, together with a focus on retaining and transitioning some of the ‘best and brightest’ highly skilled workforce to new opportunities once the shuttle retires, is an important step in addressing the continued economic health of our state.”

Earlier in the day, the Lt. Governor toured United Space Alliance and spoke with many workers who currently serve the space shuttle program and anticipate cutbacks once the shuttle program no longer requires their services. With only five launches left, the space shuttle fleet is expected to retire in 2010. NASA is developing plans for the next-generation space program and is waiting for the White House to issue its policy decisions following the Augustine Commission Report.

“One of our key priorities is to develop and execute programs designed to retain and expand space industry business in Florida, while maintaining the critical workforce and their skill sets required for the state’s next-generation space programs,” noted Lt. Governor Jeff Kottkamp.

RNC CHAIRMAN STATEMENT ON PRESIDENT OBAMA’S AFGHANISTAN STRATEGY

WASHINGTON – Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Michael Steele released the following statement today:

“Although this decision took far too long and it should not have, I am glad the president will finally provide General McChrystal with the troops he needs. However, tonight’s speech must be the beginning, not the end, of the case President Obama makes to the American people as to why this is, as he said during the campaign, ‘a war we have to win.’ If the president remains committed to this crucial fight, Republicans – and the American people – will stand with him. But sending mixed signals by outlining the exit before these troops even get on the ground undermines their ability to succeed.”

RNC RELEASES NEW WEB VIDEO “DEAD OF NIGHT” ON SENATE HEALTH CARE VOTE

WASHINGTON – The Republican National Committee announced a new web video today on moderate Senate Democrats sacrificing their principles to give Harry Reid a victory that brings America dangerously closer to having a government-run health care system. The web video, entitled “Dead of Night,” can be viewed here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TbIFmg68zTA.

“On Saturday night, a number of moderate Senate Democrats sacrificed their principles to bring America dangerously closer to government-run health care. Ben Nelson sold out his conscience and voted in favor of federally funded abortions. Blanche Lincoln sold out her principles by voting in favor of a government-run insurance plan, something she previously said she opposed. And Mary Landrieu simply sold her vote to the highest bidder after Harry Reid added a $300 million earmark just for Louisiana. Voters elected these Senators to represent their best interests. Instead they voted in the dead of night for a health care experiment that will increase taxes, raise premiums, cut Medicare, and use taxpayer dollars to fund abortion. This is not the representation Americans deserve. It’s time for these Senators to take a long hard look in the mirror and ask themselves who they really work for – their constituents or liberal Democrats like Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi.” – RNC Chairman Michael Steele

Sink Silence on Health Care Bought and Paid For By Big Labor

In Case You Missed It–For more than two months, Floridians have been waiting for Democrat Gubernatorial Candidate Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink to take a position on the Democrat’s $900 billion health care experiment.

If the vast majority of Floridians are opposed to this bureaucratic takeover of the health care industry, why won’t Alex Sink take a position? Perhaps because opposing the Democrat’s health care bill could cost her hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from the labor unions who finance her campaign.

The pressure for Sink to take a position on this controversial legislation has been mounting in recent weeks, but given the recent financial fate suffered by her Democrat colleague Congresswoman Suzanne Kosmas, Floridians will likely have to hold out in Alex Sink’s Health Care Waiting Room.

Orlando Sentinel: Unions Halt Kosmas Support Over Health Care Vote
U.S. Rep. Suzanne Kosmas, D-New Smyrna Beach, is taking more hits from the left over her vote against the Democratic health care plan that barely passed the House this month – without her support – and the fallout continued over the weekend from her previously staunch labor supporters.

Volusia/Flagler Central Labor Council President Stacy Stepanovich sent a letter to Kosmas this weekend letting her know that Central Florida labor groups will halt all contributions to her campaign until further notice, due to the Kosmas 'no' vote.

While the labor groups' early 2010 endorsement still holds, the Central Florida, Space Coast and Volusia/Flagler AFL-CIO's all voted unanimously Thursday night to suspend check-writing, flier walks, and any other efforts for the Kosmas campaign, according to this letter to Kosmas.

The Progressive Change Campaign Committee came out against Kosmas last week for the same reason.

RNC STATEMENT ON GENERAL MOTORS FINANCIAL REPORT

WASHINGTON – Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Michael Steele released the following statement today:

“Today’s release of General Motors’ financial results is further proof that President Obama’s economic experiments are wrong for America. Sadly, GM has not only failed to turn a profit since the president poured $50 billion of the taxpayers’ dollars into GM’s bankruptcy restructuring, but it has actually lost $1.2 billion. As the “Cash for Clunkers” program clearly demonstrated, government interference in private industry doesn’t help the companies involved and ends up greatly costing the American taxpayer. And now the president, Nancy Pelosi, and Harry Reid are trying to do the same thing to our health care system, which would put the government in charge of 1/6 of our economy. President Obama and Congressional Democrats believe increased spending and massive government regulation in private enterprise are best for the economy. Clearly they’re wrong.”

RNC CHAIRMAN MICHAEL STEELE STATEMENT ON GOP’S VIRGINIA SWEEP

RNC CHAIRMAN MICHAEL STEELE STATEMENT ON GOP’S VIRGINIA SWEEP

WASHINGTON – Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Michael Steele released the following statement today:

“Tonight, Republicans made history in Virginia. In a state that had been in the Democrats’ column after the 2008 election – and in DNC Chairman Tim Kaine’s own backyard – Republicans swept all three top state offices in Virginia for the first time since 1997. These significant victories speak to the fantastic campaigns run by Republicans across the Commonwealth and the voters’ clear rejection of liberal tax and spend policies that Washington Democrats are trying to force on Americans.

“Governor-elect Bob McDonnell’s common-sense conservative message of less spending, lower taxes and more responsible government clearly resonated with voters. His opposition to the Democrats’ plans for higher taxes, government-run health care and a job-killing ‘cap and trade’ bill was rewarded by Virginia voters with a victory tonight.

“Lt. Governor Bill Bolling was reelected tonight to be Virginia’s chief job creation officer and continue promoting a legislative agenda that focuses on the things we Republicans believe in – keeping government small, improving the quality of health care for Virginians, and keeping taxes low for families and businesses to make certain that Virginia remains a great place to do business.

“Virginia voters’ selection of Attorney General-elect Ken Cuccinelli to be Virginia’s top law enforcement officer ensures that public safety will be a top priority in the Commonwealth, Virginia’s second amendment rights will be protected and small businesses will be sheltered from excessive regulation.

“This is the first time since 1997 that the Republican Party has swept all three top state offices in Virginia and I believe that it highlights the desire of Virginians to have strong Republican leadership guiding their Commonwealth.

“The Republican Party’s overwhelming victory in Virginia is a blow to President Obama and the Democrat Party. It sends a clear signal that voters have had enough of the president’s liberal agenda. The Republican Party and our grassroots supporters have renewed strength in Virginia, and I look forward to working with Governor-elect McDonnell and Republicans across the state to build on our momentum.”

RNC RELEASES NEW SPANISH LANGUAGE RADIO AD ON PRESIDENT OBAMA’S AND VP BIDEN’S VISIT TO MIAMI

WASHINGTON – The Republican National Committee (RNC) today announced a new Spanish language radio ad on President Obama’s and Vice President Biden’s fundraising trips to Miami. The ad addresses the impact of President Obama’s policies on the Hispanic community. The radio ad will run Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday in the Miami media market.

“President Obama and Vice President Biden are moving forward with a reckless government-run health care experiment that will have a devastating impact on American families. Despite the jam-packed fundraising schedule the president and vice president have during their Miami visit, they should find some time to explain to Florida’s Hispanic-Americans the real consequences that the Democrats’ plan will have on their community. While Democrat leaders in Congress continue negotiations on a final health care bill in secret and behind closed-doors, Americans deserve answers to their questions. When will President Obama finally deliver the transparency he promised?” – RNC Chairman Michael Steele

SCRIPT

Time: 01:00

Voice: Miami welcomes President Obama and Vice President Biden to our city. Since you’re spending a lot of your time raising campaign dollars instead of meeting with us, we have some questions for you.

Voice: You told us that a massive new spending program would help the economy and be good for jobs. Our community has lost jobs, and now unemployment among Hispanics is nearly 13 percent. Where are the jobs? When will things get better?

Voice: Now, you say we need to overhaul our health care system. Where is the money going to come from? Will you really cut funding for Medicare to pay for it? How can that be good? That’s really going to hurt our seniors.

Voice: Big federal spending programs, no improvement in jobs, and Medicare cuts. That’s just not good enough. We can’t afford for things to keep on this way. Mr. President - is this the best you can do?

Time: 01:00

RNC RELEASES NEW WEB VIDEO “BEHIND CLOSED DOORS” ON REID’S BACK ROOM HEALTH CARE NEGOTIATIONS

RNC RAISES $8.7 MILLION IN SEPTEMBER

WASHINGTON – The Republican National Committee (RNC) today announced its fundraising numbers for September 2009.

The RNC raised $8.74 million in the month of September and has $18.9 million cash-on-hand and $0 debt. The RNC averaged 2,400 new donors per day in September, an off-year record and an increase of about 2000 new donors per day since February. The average donor contribution in September was $36.

“It goes without saying that we have been working hard to establish a new brand for the RNC. From giving a voice to the frustrations of many Americans over the president’s health care experiment, to the launch of our new web platform, our efforts have resulted in record breaking fundraising numbers for September which continues an extremely strong trend for us since February. It is clear that the Republican message of lower taxes, less spending and common sense health care reform resonates with working families and small businesses alarmed by the course the president and Congressional Democrats have taken. As we move closer to the elections this fall and in 2010, these funds will enable the RNC to provide Republican candidates throughout the country the financial resources needed to help ensure victory on election day,” said RNC chairman Michael Steele.

When Will Florida Democrats Stand Up For American Workers And Families?

Washington – Even though our country continues to face massive job loss, President Obama and Democrats in Congress continue to push a job-killing national energy tax. Despite the fact that the Congressional Budget Office has determined this so-called “cap and trade” legislation will result in more layoffs, Florida voters have reason to fear that Democrats like Suzanne Kosmas, Alan Grayson, Allen Boyd and Ron Klein will stop at nothing to please the liberal left wing of their party.

“CBO Director Douglas Elmendorf warned a Senate energy panel that there would be ‘significant shifts’ from emissions-intense sectors such as oil and refining firms to low-carbon businesses such as wind and solar power.

“’The net effect of that we think would likely be some decline in employment during the transition because labor markets don't move that fluidly,’ Mr. Elmendorf said, testifying before the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee.

“’The fact that jobs turn up somewhere else for some people does not mean there aren't substantial costs borne by people, communities, firms and affected industries,’ he said. …

“During a time of economic uncertainty, President Obama and Democrats are attempting to conduct yet another dangerous experiment that will cause even more damage.” (Ian Talley, “Congressional Budget Chief Says Climate Bill Would Cost Jobs,” The Wall Street Journal, 10/14/09)

“Each day, families are struggling to find a way to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table. As Americans continue losing their jobs, Florida Democrats are moving forward with a national energy tax that will result in further unemployment. Now voters are anxiously waiting to see if Democrats like Suzanne Kosmas, Alan Grayson, Allen Boyd and Ron Klein will continue to bow to the political pressure of liberals in Washington or finally stand up and fight for middle class families and workers. During a time of economic uncertainty, President Obama and Democrats should not be attempting another dangerous experiment that could harm our nation.” – Trevor Francis, Republican National Committee Communications Director

RPOF Launches Florida Victory 2010

Tallahassee–The Republican Party of Florida today marked the kick-off of the Florida Victory 2010 campaign. RPOF Chairman Jim Greer and Attorney General Bill McCollum announced that former Florida House Speaker Allan Bense will serve as the Florida Victory 2010 Finance Chairman.

“Our state party is strong and unified heading into this critical election cycle,” said RPOF Chairman Jim Greer. “I am grateful to General McCollum and Speaker Bense for their dedication to building our party. Their leadership enabled the RPOF to kick-off this important program early, and I am proud to partner in this important endeavor with these two great Republican leaders.”

Each election cycle, the Chairman authorizes the creation of a Florida Victory campaign within the Republican Party of Florida to create a unified financial and political strategy solely focused on benefiting Republican candidates. This year, Chairman Greer was pleased to approve the creation of the Florida Victory 2010 campaign months earlier than in previous cycles.

“With the election just over a year away, it is important to lay the groundwork for the massive expansion of staff, offices and other resources Florida Victory 2010 will utilize to ensure that Republicans across our state carry the day next November,” said Attorney General Bill McCollum. “I am grateful to Chairman Greer, Speaker Bense, and all of our Republican elected officials, county leaders, and volunteers who will contribute their resources, time and talents to this historic cause.”

Chairman Greer and General McCollum also announced that Florida House Majority Leader, Representative Adam Hasner (R-Delray Beach), Former RPOF Chairman Al Cardenas, and RPOF Finance Chairman, Ambassador John Rood will serve as Florida Victory 2010 Co-Finance Chairmen. Today’s kick-off is the result of weeks of planning between the RPOF and the Bill McCollum for Governor Campaign. The effort will be expanded to include additional statewide campaigns in the coming weeks.

“Today is a proud day for the Republican Party of Florida as we put in place the organizational structure that will enable our success in a number of important races next fall. I commend General McCollum and Chairman Greer for their leadership in establishing this organization within the Republican Party of Florida,” said Governor Crist. “By beginning this process now, our party will be better-prepared for victory in 2010.”

RNC STATEMENT ON PRESIDENT OBAMA’S NOBEL PEACE PRIZE AWARD

RNC STATEMENT ON PRESIDENT OBAMA’S NOBEL PEACE PRIZE AWARD

WASHINGTON – Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Michael Steele released the following statement today:

“The real question Americans are asking is, ‘What has President Obama actually accomplished?’ It is unfortunate that the president’s star power has outshined tireless advocates who have made real achievements working towards peace and human rights. One thing is certain – President Obama won’t be receiving any awards from Americans for job creation, fiscal responsibility, or backing up rhetoric with concrete action.”

RNC CHAIRMAN MICHAEL STEELE DELIVERS SPEECH AT NAACP 100th ANNUAL CONVENTION

NEW YORK CITY, NY – Remarks of Chairman Michael Steele, NAACP 100th Annual Convention, July 14, 2009.

Thank you for that warm welcome. I would like to thank the NAACP board of directors and Chairman Julian Bond for having me here to speak with you today. Also, President Jealous, Vice Chairman Roslyn M. Brock, and Assistant Treasurer Jesse Turner. Jr.

President Jealous and Vice Chairman Brock, I thank you for your willingness to seek out advocates in all circles. We are all interested in the educational, economic, political and social wealth of our community. I thank the board for their passion and dedication to serving the disadvantaged among us, for breaking down barriers and standing as leaders.

As a proud member of the Prince George's county chapter of the NAACP, I am honored to be here to celebrate 100 years.

The NAACP was born to fight for freedom, liberty, opportunity and fairness. Its founders were a group of brave visionaries from varying backgrounds, including black and white Republican men and women. Perhaps the most prominent African-American Republican of the group was James Weldon Johnson, the co-author of “Lift Ev’ry Voice And Sing.” Such a proud institution with an incredibly rich legacy.

I am proud to be here as the first African-American chairman of the Republican National Committee and on behalf of the RNC I bring you the warmest of greetings and congratulations!

I’ve been looking forward to this day for some time. It is for me, a particular honor to bring greetings in this 100th year. I spent some time looking at previous remarks by Republicans before this body and I was struck by the litany of phrases that republicans often cut and paste into a speech to this organization. “Party of Lincoln” four or five times ... Reminders that Teddy Roosevelt was a Republican, and he invited Booker T. Washington to the White House … and the civil rights act was passed by a Republican congress over democrat filibusters … oh, and one of my favorites, Bull Connor was a democrat.

I decided instead, that today I would depart from “the complete Republican’s guide to speaking to African-Americans.”

Let me begin with something I read the other day – a look at the statistical averages of black babies versus whites:“The black baby born in America today, regardless of the section of the nation in which he is born, has about one-half as much chance of completing high school as a white baby born in the same place on the same day . . . One-third as much chance of completing college, one-third as much chance of becoming a professional man . . . Twice as much chance of becoming unemployed, a life expectancy which is 7 years shorter, and the prospect of earning only half as much.”

That is not a pretty picture. But here’s the really heart wrenching point: those words were spoken by President John F. Kennedy in 1963.

Nearly all of what we think of as “the civil rights era” has taken place since JFK gave that speech. And in that time, a lot of progress has been made in both the political and the cultural arenas. Many of you in this room have been the authors of that progress and many others of you have witnessed it.

Indeed, not far from the steps on which I was inaugurated the first African-American Lt. Governor of Maryland in 2002, Kunta Kinte was sold into slavery over 150 years ago. Moreover, not far from the very steps on which Barack Obama was inaugurated the nation’s first African-American president, black men and women could not drink from the same water fountain as whites.

But our standing on those steps was not just a testament to progress, but also a challenge to the idea that we have completed the journey.

As far as we’ve come since 1963, the amount of progress that has been made, while impressive, leaves us empty in the face of incarceration rates, unemployment rates, drop-out rates, aids infection rates, and the general rate of poverty for African-Americans.

For 46 years of these 100 years, we have carried a lot of water for others. And yet, the long odds faced by our children have changed very little. So it is time we start to carry that water for ourselves; or we will continue to fail our community, our children, and our ability to build legacy.

At the dawning of this century, most of the problems facing black America are rooted in diminished access to quality education and fewer and fewer opportunities to either work a job or own a business. On these points, a one-party agenda often fails to get the job done.

My friends, educational and economic upward mobility are the root source of empowerment, ownership and opportunity. You undermine those and you guarantee preservation of the status quo. But you and I know our legacy has never been about status quo — remember Attucks, Tubman, Douglass, Booker t., Dubois, Malcolm, Parks, King and so many others including those who founded this venerable organization.
We are the post-civil rights generation of African-Americans and for us the battle for civil rights in the latter half of the twentieth century has become a struggle for economic and educational opportunity at the dawning of this century.

Thurgood Marshall once said, “None of us has gotten where we are solely by pulling ourselves up from our bootstraps. We got here because somebody bent down and helped us.”

My purpose for coming here today, is simply to tell you face to face, that you are not alone in that struggle. The Republican Party, which has shared an inextricable link to the African-American community, has a way forward.

The Republican Party is prepared to bend down every day to help; but, we will do so with a different perspective—a 21st century perspective that pursues policies and advances principles that turns the hope of economic liberty and empowerment into action. True freedom is ill-served by diminishing educational choices, choking off entrepreneurial spirit, and empowering government more than the people.

As Chairman of the Republican National Committee, I recognize the efforts it took to get a seat at the lunch counter, but I also know what it will take for this and future generations to own the diner. So, I have come here today not only to bring greetings, but also to renew our relationship with the NAACP and the African-American community.

And I do this with a sense of purpose and not cliché because the GOP and NAACP have very often missed real opportunities to communicate and engage each other. Indeed, for the GOP and the NAACP “outreach” should mean more than a speech here and a pat on the back there. Genuine outreach must establish a relationship on common ground and build a partnership that will benefit all concerned.

So to that end, I have already reoriented the RNC away from “doing outreach” and towards building coalitions instead — moving beyond its comfort zone to create a relationship with diverse communities and constituencies. My goal: to advance freedom in the African-American community.

As the African-American middle class emerges and grows, the Republican Party wants to be a partner who works with you to put in place the tools necessary to sustain that growth and to bring out of poverty those so often left behind. I thank you for the opportunity to explain how my party is committed to continuing in that cause. And I thank you for your kind attention here today.

Certainly my visit here today does not represent some miraculous breakthrough in GOP-NAACP relations. This is the first baby step in many more baby steps to come. After all, we all know that old loyalties and attitudes die hard. But the question is, if the GOP is willing to take those steps, will the NAACP be willing to do the same?

As you start your second century, now is an opportune time for both the NAACP and Republicans to take hold of their political destinies and step together into a new partnership.

Think about it this way: if a black man can become chairman of the Republican National Committee, then anything is possible.

Congratulations; and may God continue his blessings upon your work.

Senator Nelson's "Great Time" in the Army

Congressman Adam Putnam endorsed by Vets for Freedom PAC of Florida

BARTOW, FL – Today Congressman Adam Putnam was pleased to accept the endorsement from Vets for Freedom PAC – Florida Chapter.

“As a native Floridian, and Iraq war veteran, I am proud to support Adam Putnam,” said VFFPAC Florida State Captain, Will Bennett. “In light of his steadfast support for the military and exemplary service while in Congress, it is my honor to endorse Adam in his bid for Florida Commissioner of Agriculture. I believe Adam will bring the same strong work ethic and responsibility he has displayed in Congress to the Commissioner’s office here in Florida.”

“I am honored to be recognized and endorsed by Vets for Freedom -- an organization that has tirelessly fought for the brave men and women serving our country,” Putnam said. “Our nation's military have made great sacrifices in order to protect America's freedoms and democracy throughout history. I am deeply proud of the men and women in the Armed Forces and will always be inspired by the generations of Americans that have served our country so bravely. Our troops have always been a great priority of mine as a policy maker. Regardless of my position, I will always stand up for the heroes in uniform that have served America and secured freedom and democracy for all of us.”

Vets for Freedom PAC (VFFPAC) is a Political Action Committee whose mission is to help candidates-mostly combat veterans-who believe in achieving success in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the overall War on Terrorism, get elected to the United States Congress and other Federal positions. Established by combat veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan on November 11, 2007, Veterans Day, VFFPAC will endorse and offer extended support through financial contributions and media assistance to Federal candidates who support victory in the Global War on Terrorism.

Greer: Sink Should Demand Apology for Sexist Remark

Tallahassee – Republican Party of Florida Chairman Jim Greer today called on Florida’s Democrat Gubernatorial Candidate Alex Sink to demand that Governor Brian Schweitzer (D – Montana), head of the Democratic Governors Association, apologize for his sexist comments:
“As a female candidate seeking our state’s highest office, I am sure that Alex Sink personally understands the hurtful and inappropriate comments made by Governor Schweitzer,” said Chairman Greer. “CFO Sink has an opportunity to show Floridians, especially Florida’s women, that she won’t stand for this type of chauvinistic behavior. Sink should immediately demand an apology from Governor Schweitzer.”
Washington Post: A Governor's Sexist Remark
The problems facing women running for office were vividly, if unintentionally, highlighted in Dan Balz's June 7 The Take column, "Close Races in Virginia, New Jersey May Be Indicators for 2010," in which Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer was quoted as praising Virginia gubernatorial candidate Terence R. McAuliffe as someone who, "when there's a bump in the road, he's not going to cry like a girl and quit."
First, the comment has to make you wonder how well Mr. Schweitzer, as head of the Democratic Governors Association, will encourage or work for female candidates. Then you have to wonder about Mr. Balz reporting on Mr. Schweitzer's remark without any comment. Would such a comment about a minority group be treated as a perfectly understandable description of what one does not wish to be? It is hard to believe that a year ago, Hillary Rodham Clinton was being pilloried for overcoming bumps in the road and continuing to fight in the presidential race. The last thing I wonder is whether The Post will publish any commentary on this latest piece of practical sexism

Back in the USSR?

Tallahassee–Republican Party of Florida Chairman Jim Greer today released the following statement regarding President Obama’s most recent appointment of yet another czar to his administration which, in 5 short months, has now surpassed the number of czars appointed during the 300 years of Russia’s Romanov Dynasty:

“It is absolutely ridiculous that President Obama has appointed, and will most likely continue to appoint, countless czars which are nothing more than symbolic figureheads to demonstrate to the American people that he is concerned about the buzz word of the day–border czar, regulation czar, infotech czar, urban czar, the list goes on and even includes a “compensation czar,” responsible for deciding the salaries of the top 100 employees of publicly traded companies!”

In over 300 years, the Romanov Dynasty ruled Russia with only 18 czars, yet in only five short months, the United States now has an excess of over 20 czars. What happened to cutting back and doing more with less?”

“These absurd positions do nothing but take away from the transparency that President Obama promised the American people. Who do the czars report to? The President? Members of the Cabinet? Congress? Certainly not the American people? These czars allow for an unacceptable sense of unaccountability in our government. What happened to the checks and balances between the branches of government that our forefathers carefully built into our Constitution? To me it looks like those values are being side stepped in favor of an army of presidentially appointed mini-dictators. Enough is enough.”

Obama Now Has "Upward of 20" Czars: "Name a top issue and President Barack Obama has probably got a 'czar' responsible for tackling it ... There are upward of 20 such top officials, all with lengthy official titles but known in the media as czars ... Linda Fowler, a professor of government at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, said presidents often appoint czars in a symbolic move to show they care about an issue." (Steve Holland, "Obama Fashions A Government of Many Czars," Reuters, 5/29/09)

This List Is Only Conservative Estimate: "In addition to [border czar Alan] Bersin, we have energy czar Carol Browner, urban czar Adolfo Carrion, Jr., infotech czar Vivek Kundra, faith-based czar Joshua DuBois, health reform czar Nancy-Ann DeParle, new TARP czar Herb Allison, stimulus accountability czar Earl Devaney, non-proliferation czar Gary Samore, terrorism czar John Brennan, regulatory czar Cass Sunstein, drug czar Gil Kerlikowske, and Guantanamo closure czar Daniel Fried. We also have a host of special envoys that fall into the czar category including AfPak special envoy Richard Holbrooke, Mideast peace envoy George Mitchell, special advisor for the Persian Gulf and Southwest Asia Dennis Ross, Sudan special envoy J. Scott Gration and climate special envoy Todd Stern. That's 18. This is a very conservative estimate, however ... [Y]ou could count de facto car czar Steve Rattner ... You could count National Director of Int elligence Dennis Blair, often referred to as the intelligence czar ... I'm not going to count Paul Volcker who was referred to as Obama's economic czar." (David J. Rothkopf, "It's Official: Obama Creates More Czars Than The Romanovs," Foreign Policy, 4/16/09)
Russia's Romanov Dynasty Only Had 18 Czars In Over 300 Years. "[T]he Obama administration has by any reasonable reckoning passed the Romanov Dynasty in the production of czars. The Romanovs ruled Russia from 1613 with the ascension of Michael I through the abdication of Czar Nicholas II in 1917. During that time, they produced 18 czars. While it is harder to exactly count the number of Obama administration czars, with yesterday's appointment it seems fair to say it is now certainly in excess of 18." (David J. Rothkopf, "It's Official: Obama Creates More Czars Than The Romanovs," Foreign Policy, 4/16/09)
In Letter To The White House, Senator Byrd Warned: "The rapid and easy accumulation of power by White House staff can threaten the constitutional system of checks and balances." (Cindy Skrzycki, "Obama's Czars Breed Chain-Of-Command Confusion," Bloomberg, 3/17/09)
American University Governance Expert Warned Czars Create Less Accountable, More "Incomprehensible" System. "This scenario lends credence to the concern that czars will add a layer of opaqueness and unaccountability to a rule-making system that's largely incomprehensible to the outside world and a puzzle even to seasoned pros representing industry groups, companies and the public. 'Every time you add another variable, you will have trouble sorting out what had influence on a rulemaking,' said Cornelius Kerwin, president of American University in Washington who wrote the book, 'Rulemaking: How Government Agencies Write Law and Make Policy.' 'It's not like legislative or judicial decisions.'" (Cindy Skrzycki, "Obama's Czars Breed Chain-Of-Command Confusion," Bloomberg, 3/17/09

Under Kosmas’ Watch, NASA Jobs in Jeopardy

Kosmas Campaign Promises Go Unfulfilled, Space Coast Jobs Hang in Balance
Six Months into Term, Is Kosmas Still Unprepared on Space Issues?

Washington – NASA jobs on Florida’s Space Coast are being threatened by congressional Democrats (Walter Alarkon, “NASA states going ballistic over cash cuts,” The Hill, 6/11/09), and it’s happening on the watch of Suzanne Kosmas.

“Suzanne Kosmas promised her constituents that she would protect NASA funding and local jobs, and she has failed,” said Ken Spain, NRCC Communications Director. “Representing a NASA district as a member of the majority is a big responsibility, and Suzanne Kosmas just doesn’t appear to be cut out for it.”

BACKGROUND:

• A 2008 Orlando Sentinel article indicated that Kosmas was unprepared on space issues:
“But attacking [Kosmas’ opponent] on space could be risky for Kosmas, a real-estate broker with little background in the issue. A recent interview indicates she knows far less about NASA and the space program than does [her opponent]…In response to questions, for example, Kosmas was unsure how much NASA spends on climate research compared to other priorities. And she could not answer questions on the planned use of Russian spacecraft by American astronauts. (Mark Matthews, “Candidates exchange jabs on KSC funds,” Orlando Sentinel, 6/5/08)

• Despite her ignorance of NASA issues, Kosmas cynically used them to attack her 2008 opponent: (Mark Matthews, “Kosmas campaign tries to box Feeney into corner on NASA,” Orlando Sentinel “Central Florida Political Pulse” blog, 10/9/08)

• During this year’s stimulus debate, Kosmas put party loyalty ahead of NASA funding:
“Kosmas also made clear she far prefers the bill passed by the House to the Senate version, even though that package includes more money for NASA.” (Staff, “Kosmas backs stimulus bill after appearance with Obama,” Orlando Sentinel “Central Florida Political Pulse” blog, 2/10/09

• Kosmas voted for the stimulus package, which fell woefully short of NASA’s requests (Stewart Powell, “Stimulus bill leaves NASA with less than requested,” Houston Chronicle, 1/29/09)
• Kosmas made full funding of NASA’s requests one of her top campaign promises:
“I will always fight to ensure that the Kennedy Space Center is given what it needs to remain strong and continue its spirit of exploration and excellence and will also fight to fully fund NASA's requests in our national budget.” (Suzanne Kosmas campaign website, http://kosmasforcongress.com/priorities/space, accessed 6/11/09)

Congressman from ACORN Strikes Again

Tallahassee–Republican Party of Florida Chairman Jim Greer today released the following statement regarding Congressman Alan Grayson’s $350,000 earmark for the controversial Florida Civil Rights Association whose founder, J. Willie David, a former bail bondsman, has been accused of stealing money from clients and extorting money from orphans.

“It seems the Congressman from ACORN has struck again,” said Chairman Greer. “In an attempt to funnel $350,000 of taxpayer money to a friend and ex-bail bondsman/would-be orphan profiteer who hustles the poor and takes advantage of central Florida’s less fortunate, he has once again proven he is an embarrassment to his constituents.”

“It is time for Alan Grayson to take a stand and serve the citizens of central Florida in the way that they deserve,” continued Greer. “And sending $350,000 of their hard earned money to an organization run by a personal friend and professional con-artist is a troublesome lapse in judgment and unfair to his constituents.”

“I am thrilled and honored to have the support of such respected public servants,” Benacquisto said. “Our campaign is off to a great start and we have traveled the district several times already meeting with leaders in Ft. Myers, Lehigh Acres, and throughout the Palm Beach County portion of the district,” she continued. “We will be working hard to reach out and meet the voters of this district and earn their trust and support,” Benacquisto added.

Lizbeth currently serves on the Wellington Village Council and has been a long‐time community activist. She is seeking election to the Florida Senate, District 27.

Meek Supports Importing Gitmo Detainees to FL?

Tallahassee–Republican Party of Florida Chairman Jim Greer today released the following statement calling on Miami Congressman and United States Senate Candidate Kendrick Meek to tell Floridians whether or not he supports bringing terrorists currently detained at Guantanamo Bay to the Sunshine State.

“Yesterday we saw the first Guantanamo Bay detainee plead not-guilty to the al-Qaida bombings of U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, attacks that killed more than 224 people, including 12 Americans. Ahmed Ghailani is the first of many terrorists who will face trial here in the United States as the Obama Administration moves forward with plans to close the military prison at Guantanamo Bay, the current home to dozens of terrorists responsible for the deaths of hundreds of Americans, and the destruction of billions of dollars of property.

“Does Kendrick Meek support the Obama Administration’s plans to bring those terrorists to the United States, and if so, would he bring them to Florida? Recent polling shows that by a margin of 2-1, Americans do not believe Guantanamo detainees should be moved to the United States.

“Will Meek go against the will of the people? Kendrick Meek needs to come clean and explain his position on allowing terrorists to be brought to Florida. If he doesn’t support the Obama Administration’s plan, now is the time to speak up – Floridians are waiting. If Meek can’t show leadership as a Congressman, he won’t show leadership in the U.S Senate.”

Bronson Endorses McCollum

Bronson Endorses McCollum for Governor

Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Commissioner Charles Bronson today endorsed Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum as the Republican candidate for Governor of the State of Florida for the 2010 Election.

Please see the text of the Commissioner’s endorsement letter below, or click here to download a printable version of the letter.

Dear Republican Leaders,

I am writing you today to discuss matters that I feel are important to us as a Party and ultimately, our great state.

As many of you may have heard, I recently announced that, while I gave it much consideration, I have decided against running for Governor in 2010. I came to this decision after a great deal of discussion with my friends, family and supporters and wanted to let you, as leaders of our Party, in on my decision making process.

I have always believed that primary campaigns are a healthy part of the Republican Party.
Primaries foster healthy policy discussions, energize both the volunteer and donor corps and strengthen candidates for the General election. While I do believe in all of these things, I also believed that in making my decision to run for Governor, I needed to take a long look at the particular circumstances that our Party faces in the upcoming election.

Upon taking inventory of the current environment, I concluded that running for Governor was not the appropriate thing for me to do at this time. I came to this conclusion because the Democrat Party has clearly solidified behind their candidate for Governor. In tough economic times like these, the last thing our Party needs is a protracted Primary battle where we spend all of our resources fighting with each other, rather than focusing on the General election. Now is the time to be united behind our nominee and to that end, I enthusiastically endorse Attorney General Bill McCollum.

Bill is a friend, a guardian for consumers and our children, a steady, experienced hand and he is the solid leader that is needed to guide us out of the tough economic times that we are facing. I know Bill is the strongest candidate that the Republican Party could nominate for Governor and I know that he will make a great Governor. I hope you will stand with me, over the next 17 months, as I focus on doing whatever is needed to ensure that Bill McCollum is elected as the next Governor of our beautiful state.

With kind regards,
Charlie Bronson

A Message from Chairman Greer Regarding the GM Bankruptcy

A Message from Chairman Greer Regarding the GM Bankruptcy

Friends,

The bankruptcy of General Motors is an unfortunate circumstance for our nation. My heart goes out to the individuals and families, particularly those here in Florida, affected by GM’s bankruptcy and the ensuing government takeover.

Back in February, President Obama said the federal government needed to bailout GM and Chrysler with $20 billion of taxpayer money – now both are bankrupt. President Obama has assured Americans that he didn’t want to be in the business of making cars, yet the federal government now owns 60 percent of GM.

The Obama administration’s involvement in GM’s bankruptcy means taxpayers will spend $30 billion more to help GM to reorganize. This regrettable incident is more proof that the ‘change’ President Obama promised for America is really a dangerous expansion of government and stands in stark contrast to the values of less taxing, less spending, and less government that our Republican leaders fight for each day. I encourage you to click here to watch our Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele discuss this important issue.

Warmest Regards,

Jim

Chairman Greer Announces RPOF Staff Changes

Tallahassee–Republican Party of Florida Chairman Jim Greer today announced staff changes for the RPOF Political, Finance, Field Operations and Communications Departments. The Chairman appointed Bret Prater, a veteran political operative, to serve as Political Director, promoted Amanda Wheeler to serve as Finance Director and Brad Herold to Deputy Director of Field Operations. Chairman Greer restructured the Communications Department, promoting Katie Gordon to Communications Director, Jennifer McMillan to Deputy Director of Communications and Carla Rivera to Deputy Director of Communications, overseeing Hispanic Media Relations.

“Throughout 2009, the RPOF is focused on voter registration, technology, coalitions building, and youth outreach,” said Greer. “The reorganization of these key departments maximizes our talent and resources in the off-year, and will lead to greater success in 2010.”

“Chairman Greer announced today’s staff changes as the conclusion of a reorganization of the RPOF Political, Finance, Field Operations and Communications Departments,” said RPOF Executive Director Delmar Johnson. “The new structure will allow for a better utilization of staff and resources during the off year, in preparation for the 2010 Election next November.”

Bret Prater, Political Director, most recently served the Republican Party as a coordinator of the RPOF’s Get Out the Vote Program, specifically managing a statewide team focused on absentee ballot chase efforts. Prater previously served as the Deputy Director of External Affairs in the Executive Office of Governor Crist and as a Special Assistant to the Governor for a 37 county region in North Florida. During the 2006 Election Cycle, Prater organized the RPOF’s statewide precinct walker program and served on the Charlie Crist Inaugural Committee. He spent much of 2005 and 2006 organizing the political activities for Florida’s largest professional trade association, the Florida Assoc iation of Realtors. Prater worked with the Bush/Cheney ‘04 team, where he served as a Victory Field Director in North Florida and was also a grassroots organizer for the Bush/Brogan ‘02 Gubernatorial Campaign in Miami-Dade County.

Amanda Wheeler, Finance Director, most recently served as the RPOF’s Finance Liaison, working with Chairman Greer, RPOF Finance Chairman Ambassador John Rood, Finance Co-Chairman Steve Burton, members of the RPOF Statewide Finance Committee and senior management to develop the Party’s statewide finance strategy. Wheeler is responsible for coordinating every aspect of major donor events here in Florida and across the country. She is a graduate of the Florida State University.

Brad Herold, Deputy Director of Field Operations, joined the RPOF Team in 2007, after serving in the Executive Office of Governor Crist. As the Deputy Director of Field Operations, Herold will assist Bret Prater and Deputy Executive Director of Operations John Davis with the coordination of 67 Republican Executive Committees as well as Republican clubs and organizations throughout Florida. The department manages the RPOF Field Coordinators and works with members of the State Executive Committee to ensure that the Chairman’s initiatives are carried out across the state. Herold will take on additional responsibilities including graphic design and multimedia production.

The Field Operations Department is responsible for overseeing the 2009 RPOF Youth Initiative. Led by recently appointed Youth Outreach Coordinators, Tim Nungesser and Kathryn Salerno, the RPOF Youth Outreach Initiative is a comprehensive program aimed at encouraging young Floridians between the ages of 15 and 35 to consider joining the Republican Party. The program includes multiple voter registration and technology components and will culminate with a statewide conference this summer.

Katie Gordon, Communications Director, most recently served as Press Secretary of the Republican Party of Florida. Gordon rejoined the RPOF Team in January 2008, after coordinating communications for the Florida Office of the Fred Thompson for President Campaign. She previously served as a speechwriter in the Press and Communications Office of Governor Crist and worked as a Communications Assistant on the Crist Transition Team and at the Republican Party of Florida. Gordon graduated from the Florida State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science and History and a Master’s Degree in Political Science.

Jennifer McMillan, Deputy Communications Director, has served as the RPOF Press Assistant for nearly two years. In her new capacity, McMillan will oversee e-campaigns and new media, taking on a leadership role in the Party’s continued efforts to upgrade technology and diversify communication strategies. McMillan is a graduate of the Florida State University.

Carla Rivera, Deputy Communications Director overseeing Hispanic Media Relations, will continue to coordinate the RPOF’s outreach to Hispanic media and will remain the Hispanic spokesperson for the organization. Rivera is a graduate of Florida International University and is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Linguistics as well as a Certificate in Translating and Interpreting.

Greer Names John Davis Deputy Executive Director

Tallahassee–Republican Party of Florida Chairman Jim Greer today named John F. Davis RPOF Deputy Executive Director of Operations. In addition to his role as Director of Minority Outreach and Coalitions, as Deputy Executive Director, Davis will oversee RPOF Operations, aiding Chairman Greer and Executive Director Delmar Johnson with the long and short term management of the organization.

“I am grateful for the leadership John has demonstrated over the last two years. As the first RPOF Director of Minority Outreach and Coalitions, John has gained a tremendous amount of experience and knowledge in grassroots outreach and organization within Florida’s minority communities,” said Chairman Greer. “This promotion will enable John to better utilize his extensive management experience for the betterment of the organization as a whole. I am looking forward to continuing to work with him to better spread the Republican message, headed into this critical election cycle.”

“I am grateful for the opportunity to serve the RPOF in this capacity and will work diligently with Chairman Greer and the entire Republican Party of Florida to energize our grassroots volunteers while ensuring that the Republican Party of Florida remains at the forefront of minority outreach initiatives,” said Deputy Executive Direct John Davis.

John F. Davishas served with the RPOF organization since 2007. Originally appointed Deputy Director of Field Operation, Davis was later promoted to Director of Minority Outreach and Collations, when Chairman Greer created the new department in August 2007. In this capacity, Davis oversees the operations of the RPOF’s African American, Hispanic, Jewish and Women’s Leadership Councils, organizing and maintaining a network of minority outreach coordinators in 67 counties, and managing all elements of the RPOF’s presence in minority communities across the state.

Davis brings to the RPOF more than a decade of management expertise in the field of sales as well as extensive work on a number of political and issue advocacy campaigns. Davis is a graduate of the Florida State University where he played varsity football. Davis and his wife Felicia reside in Altamonte Springs.

RPOF Launches Statewide Voter Registration Initiative

Tallahassee–Republican Party of Florida Chairman Jim Greer today launched the RPOF’s Statewide Voter Registration Initiative, laying the groundwork for the Get Out the Vote (GOTV) efforts of the 2010 General Election.

“We must not allow the success Democrats have seen in voter registration in recent months to lead to success at the ballot box,” said Chairman Greer. “With a U.S Senate Seat and four open Cabinet races in 2010, we must maintain our focus on the general election next November and work to build our infrastructure of registered voters and grassroots volunteers who will implement our nationally recognized GOTV Program.”

Voter registration is the basis of the RPOF’s nationally recognized GOTV Program. Throughout the last few days of the election cycle, the RPOF enlists a statewide network of volunteers who conduct a wide range of GOTV activities. This year, the RPOF began the process early. Rather than hiring a GOTV Director to implement a plan from Tallahassee, Chairman Greer has distributed a Voter Registration Survey to the Republican Executive Committee Chairman, State Committeeman, and State Committeewoman in each county to gather specific information regarding the voter registration needs of individual counties. Later this summer, the RPOF will deploy Voter Registration Strike Teams to each county to provide training for grassroots leaders and volunteers, based on those specific goals. Following the RPOF Voter Registration Strike Team, county leaders will be responsible for imple menting unique voter registration and volunteer recruitment goals. The initiative begins this weekend with a Voter Registration Strike Team attending the Okaloosa County Billy Bowlegs Festival.

“A successful GOTV Program takes months to plan, build and manage,” said Chairman Greer. “This year, we are working from the ground up, starting with the county leadership. Local leaders will provide insight and information, suggest a timeframe and training schedule, work with an RPOF Voter Registration Strike Team and finally carry out an aggressive calendar of voter registration activities focused on local needs.”

Florida led the nation in the number of volunteer voter contacts six of the last seven weeks of the 2008 Election Cycle. Through extensive volunteer efforts, the RPOF contacted more than four million voters in 2008, more than ever before. During the 2008 GOVT Program, volunteers made over one million phone calls and knocked on more than 100,000 doors. The RPOF also created a new Absentee Ballot Request Walk Program and implemented Absentee Chase efforts, which were nationalized by the Republican National Committee. Additionally, the RPOF installed upgraded phone systems with advanced data capture methods to better target voters and launched a text message pilot program to contact volunteers and voters.

“Democrats have long held a voter registration advantage in the State of Florida, yet because of our successful GOTV Program Republicans hold the Governor’s Mansion and three of four Cabinet positions, as well as majorities in the State House, State Senate and Congressional Delegation,” continued Chairman Greer. “Last year the GOP had a tough time in other states, but as Republicans in the State of Florida, we have much to be proud of. While we were all disappointed to see Florida turn blue at the Presidential level, the Democrats were not able to ride President Obama’s coattails into the down ticket races. In a year with record voter turnout and with the best ground game the Democrats have ever had, not a single Republican incumbent in the Florida House or Senate was defeated. I am proud of that record and confident that despite the changes we have seen in registration, our Voter Registration Initiative will form the basis for a successful GOTV Program in 2010 and beyond.”

Statement on President Obama’s Supreme Court Nomination

Tallahassee–Republican Party of Florida Chairman Jim Greer released the following statement regarding President Barack Obama’s nomination of federal appeals court judge Sonia Sotomayor to serve on the United States Supreme Court.
“Supreme Court nominations are one of the most important decisions facing a President of the United States. Supreme Court justices can wield influence on the high court for more than a generation and should be thoroughly vetted by both the Executive and Legislative Branches.
We look forward to a complete review of Judge Sotomayor’s record and her personal convictions, as they relate to the judicial philosophy she would employ as a justice on the United States Supreme Court.
For today, we congratulate Judge Sotomayor on this accomplishment and look forward to the coming weeks as members of the United States Senate face the daunting task of carefully analyzing Judge Sotomayor’s qualifications and experience as well as her extensive writings and opinions.

Greer: Floridians Won’t Sink Florida

Tallahassee–Republican Party of Florida Chairman Jim Greer today reacted to Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink’s decision to run for Governor of the State of Florida in the 2010 Election.

“I welcome former banker Alex Sink to the Governor’s race. After years of smoke in mirrors, it is about time for Floridians to meet the real Alex Sink,” said Chairman Greer.

“Getting Florida’s economy back on track and creating jobs will be the number one task of Florida’s next Governor. On this front, Alex Sink has failed and will continue to fail,” continued Chairman Greer.

• The real Alex Sink was paid millions of dollars while overseeing what the head of Atlanta’s Legal-Aid called “subprime predatory mortgage lending.”
• The real Alex Sink fired thousands of Floridianswhile earning her millions through these predatory lending practices.
• The real Alex Sink used the very same practices that well known economists have linked to the significant economic downturn that Florida is facing today.
• The real Alex Sink played the leading role in tanking Florida’s economy.

“The real Alex Sink played a leading role in tanking Florida’s economy,” concluded Chairman Greer. “Alex Sink has been enough of a hazard as Chief Financial Officer, and I don’t believe that the people of this great state will risk Alex Sink and her ‘troubled assets’ in the Governor’s Mansion.”

Background:
“In three final years of pay, stock options and deferred compensation, she [Alex Sink] drew $8.8 million.”(Orlando Sentinel 04/06/03)

The head of Atlanta Legal Aid testified before Congress that both Barnett and Bank of America [both companies Alex Sink oversaw] engaged in “sub-prime predatory mortgage lending.” (Testimony of William Brennan before House Committee on Banking and Financial Services, 05/31/00)

“As the executive in charge of the Nations Bank – Barnett Banks merger, Sink was responsible for firing 6,000 Floridians.” (Orlando Sentinel, 01/01/98)

“Many big banks have had a hard time digesting acquisitions and underestimated how much capital they would need to survive. Multiple regional banks have high concentrations in risky assets or geographic areas, such as Florida.” (Wall Street Journal 04/11/09).
